I want to have a homebirth (If I can convince my husband for a 3rd baby), but I was wondering about the cost. Our insurance doesn't currently cover anything maternity so what on average does a midwife cost? prenatal and actual birth?
The area you live in will affect the cost more than any other factor I think, but in Austin, Texas we are paying $3500 for everything. Includes all prenatal appointments, birth assisted by two midwives, normal lab work, and 3 postpartum appointments. I only had one ultrasound and that was extra from a separate provider.
Our midwife had a flat fee of $2800. We also had a montrice who was $450. The birthing supplies were cheap...probably less than $50. Is there anyway you could get flexible spending to help with the cost?
I think in most markets it is somewhere around $2-4,000 total. Not sure about places like New York city though.
Most midwives are also willing to barter/negotiate if finances are an issue, and some will offer a discount if you pay in cash by a certain point in the pregnancy.
I'm in Cincinnati, Ohio the average midwidwife here seems to charge around $2,500- $3,000 plus you buy a lot of your own supplies (birth kit, extra towels, bath salts, gauze, on and on) and rent or buy your own tub.

Our midwife's cash fee is $5,500 but we are in a high-cost area. Luckily our insurance covers it. We are spending about $200 on supplies including a pool.

My SIL and her husband want a home water birth, but were worried about finances(where they are located it is 5-6000). When her mom asked when would be a good baby shower date, she laughingly responded with "id rather have them put money towards the birth than gifts!".
They ended up have a donation account set up, so everyone in the family and all the friends who would have bought a shower gift, ended up donating anywhere from 5-200 dollars towards the cost. The way this was done was very tasteful, it was not set up by my SIL and it was put out as a baby shower alternative. So far they have about 1000 to help with the cost. Just thought I would share!
In the Twin Cities, Minnesota...$4,000 flat fee, which includes a tub, all prenatal appts., birth, 3 postnatal appts., additional appts. if necessary (for breastfeeding or other concerns). I think the supplies I purchased were appx. $125.
I have 2 midwives and they are very flexible with payment plans. Basically they say pay what you can when you can.
In Washington most midwives seem to charge between 2200-3200(depending on if you're in Seattle or not). My insurance is covering my midwife, but I had to really fight for it. If the insurance wasn't going to cover the midwife she was going to discount her price from 2800 to 2200 and let us make payments. The supplies are costing us around $50. We're also paying $450 cash for another midwife to be there as a doula and I have a second doula who's free because she's in training.

Here in New Jersey, the only midwife who will do a home birth in my area charges $6000, and this includes all prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care. Also includes all of the supplies, and the tub. We just need to have extra towels available!
Also, any blood work I have is out of pocket, as I do not have insurance. My midwife draws my blood, but the lab bills us.
We moved several times during my first pregnancy; so I had 3 midwives in 3 cities. In NYC it would cost us $9,000 with an additional $1,000 for the MW mandatory doula for first time moms (had to use her doula) and an additional $50 or so for supplies, in small town Michigan it was $2,000 plus an $50 for supplies, and in Phoenix, AZ we paid $2,500 plus $50 for supplies. This time our MW has a bigger practice and the cost is $2,700, but it includes lab work and some supplies. We need about $20 worth of supplies on our own.
It's worth every penny (if you can swing it) to have the birth you want.

We've been interviewing MW's in the Twin Cities and that seems about average for what we're seeing as well. We've gotten everything from $3500 to $5000. And I agree - they have all seem very flexible with payment plans.
