Travel - foods to bring on airplane

Hi ladies - I'm going to Mexico with my baby on Saturday and was just researching what is ok to bring on the flight. I'll nurse during take off and landing, but I wanted to have some food for her to eat. I'll bring "dry" food like cheerios, goldfish and cereal bars, but have any of you been successful bringing on the baby food pouches, yogurt or applesauce if you say clearly that it is for the baby? I also want to bring a banana which I believe is ok as long as it's consumed before landing.

Since I want to delay nursing til takeoff (7am) I also would like to bring a sippy of milk which SEEMS to be ok, but there's lots of conflicting information - it seems like it depends a lot on who you happen to get at security which is annoying!

Any tips would be appreciated!

  • I did not bring yogurt or applesauce, but we did bring puree baby food and we were able to take that so I would think applesauce would be fine.  Also I did bring a sippy of milk.  You just have to tell them at security and take it out so they can inspect it.

  • You probably can't bring a banana or other raw fruit onto an international flight.  Bring packaged things like unopened baby food/puree/applesauce.  DD also loves the Gerber Yogurt Melt things, great way to get fruit in without all the mess.  Put it in your diaper bag and be sure to announce it when you go through security.

When you get off the plane, throw away anything you don't use so you don't have to take it through customs.

  • You can take any of the baby foods.  I took baby yogurt and they checked my bag...so make sure you keep any baby food out with your keys and such (when they x-ray things).  Next time I would just put any puree baby food that I take in a large zip lock bag so that they can see what it is right away.  But they let you take any of the prepackaged baby foods.  I took yogurt melts, cheerios, grahm sticks, that sort of thing for him to munch on (and the yogurt as a sort-of meal).

  • Thanks for the tips! I wasn't sure about the banana - I figured it would be fine if we disposed of it before going through customs in Mexico. I can't find anything about bringing fruit on international flights, but if I can bring packaged stuff, that's fine!

You can bring them on a plane, but you can't take them off the plane once you get to Mexico. I bring fruit on international flights all the time and as long as you eat it or leave it on the plane it is fine.

And usually you can bring food in that isn't fruit, meat, veggies, etc. Meaning your baby food will be okay to take into the country.

  • I traveled last summer w DS and had sippy cups, bottles w water, and jars of food and no problems at all.  Just a hassle carrying it all in the airport :)

  • Whenever we fly, I do take food and things like that on board. However, I let the TSA know right up front that I have that stuff. Sometimes they just shrug and have it go right through the x-ray machine. Other times they selected a couple to test. I feel you have less issues if you tell them up front. It's when I'd forget to mention something that it was an issue. I guess it then seems like you are tyring to hide something or get away with something. i just kinda ask, like this is our first time, so everyone has been very nice and accommodating.

  • I have brought liquids through many many times and never had any trouble.  I put them in the bin alongside my diaper bag so that they;'re easier to find, but nobody cares even when I forget.  They have always scanned, but never taken away anything.

I typically bring dry finger foods because feeding messy foods in a very tiny space is just too much for me.  I don't want to open a yogurt and have him eat half of it.  Then what do I do with it?  Plus, I envision applesauce smeared all over me, him, the window, the chair, the hair of the person in front of me, etc.  I would rather dole out Cheerios a few at a time to entertain him.  I think the pouches sound like a good idea though.
