Natural Birth

Natural home birth/birthing pool after hospital birth???

Ok, so I just found out this morning that I am pregnant..not sure just how far along of course, but it couldn't be more than a few weeks. I have a ten month old son that I had induced in a hospital setting last year. The experience as far as pain was concerned..well, that was nonexistent..no pain, my doc did well as far as that was concerned. My pregnancy was very low-risk with no complications, he was head down, perfect position for delivery. I was induced because the doc said that he felt that I would do better..being my first delivery, I went with him. He's been around for quite some time and has delivered numerous friends babies. During induction, Nathaniel's heartrate fell many times, I was put on fluids, given Brethine--to slow contractions and monitored religiously. He was born the next evening with meconium aspiration and eventually taken to NICU where he stayed for 1 week. He was a healthy baby otherwise-- 19 1/2 inches 7.5 oz. Due to the meconium he had a pnuemonia and that resulted in his stay. I read afterward that sometimes inductions..due to the pitocin and your body not really ready for the birth..can cause this. I am an RN so I'm not opposed to modern medicine..of course, but I do enjoy the more holistic approach if applicable. I am wanting advice from moms out there on water births...especially after episiotomy and hospital delivery. Share your experience and pros and cons..of course I am assuming that I will have a great and uncomplicated pregnancy this time :) hopefully! Thank you all in advance and good luck with your pregnancies as well!!!

Re: Natural home birth/birthing pool after hospital birth???

  • Give me about a week or so and I'll be able to answer your question. I had 2 previous hospital births, both with epis and some pit and am planning a home water birth this time around. Both times my OB cut me, in addition to some small tears. The cuts (I assume) were way worse than the small tears if they had just left me alone.

I have heard (and my MW also told me this) that the water can help with the perineum stretching to avoid tears or at least major ones.

I'm looking forward to hearing what responses this post gets, and hope to be able to add my own experience very soon. Congrats and good luck to you Smile

  • I had a hospital birth with my 1st (DD) and a birth center waterbirth with my 2nd (DS).  DD was born at 41w and I was scheduled for an induction, but went into labor the night before at 40w6d.  I ended up getting an epidural at 6 cm and labor stalled, so I also ended up getting some pitocin.  She did have meconium in her water, but thankfully didn't aspirate any of it.  I didn't have an episiotomy, but I did have a 2nd degree tear.

DS was born at 41w4d.  I labored in the tub for close to 5 hours and it was awesome, awesome, awesome.  The hot water really took the edge of the contractions and I was able to doze in between.  I wasn't set on a water birth, but once I got in the tub I wasn't getting out.  I finally had my water broken because it was basically holding him in and I was fully dilated and not feeling the urge to puch.  I was reluctant to have my water broken because I was sure there would would be meconium present being 11 days past my due date and I didn't want to risk being transferred if I could help it.  But, there wasn't any meconium and DS was born about 20 minutes after the CNM broke my water.  I was didn't have any tearing with him.

I LOVED my labor and delivery the second time around and can not imagine having a baby any other way.  I was transferred to the hospital about 3 hrs postpartum for a hemorrhage, and it definitely reminded me how much I loved the homey feeling of the birth center.  I do not know if I would have been able to accomplish a med-free birth if I was in the hospital.

The link to my son's birth story is below if you would like to read it.  Also, I would be happy to answer any additional questions you have.  Congrats on #2!

  • Thanks for the post. I have no answers, but DD was a hospital-born, med-free, problem-free birth, so we are leaning heavily towards a home water birth. I'll be watching to see what others say here.
  • Thank you for answering, I was out of town for a while so I'm just now remembering to get on here and check! :) I haven't found a birthing center near where I'm staying at the moment, but I'm still looking for one in the vicinity... hoping I'll find something..fingers crossed.
