does Beaumont RO have a birthing tub?

Does anyone know if Beaumont Royal Oak has a birthing tub (or several)? I am sorta kinda considering a natural birth and I am thinking I might be able to convince myself if I can be in water for part of labor. I know I will be able to find out on a tour but that's weeks and weeks away and I will need a LONG time to convince myself if this is gonna happen.

Thanks in advance ladies!

Re: does Beaumont RO have a birthing tub?

  • I dont remember seeing one.  I could be wrong I passed out on the tour and in the end I ended up with a Csection, but the room I was in didnt have a birthing tub.  I think I remember the nurse saying they dont have one.  They have private showers with a small tub but I think that is it.

  • This is going to be completely not helpful...but the Troy Beaumont has 2 rooms with tubs. So it's a toss up if one of them would be open or not. I was put it one of the rooms with tubs, but never got to use it due to complications.

I also am pretty sure that it's Beaumont policy not to allow actual birthing in said tubs. I had asked my midwife what would happen if I refused to get out, or accidentally got to the pushing stage in there. She said they would drag me out and I could have my baby on the bathroom floor. Lovely.

  • Just an FYI- I was told last year that Royal Oak Beaumont doesn't allow midwives to deliver, only Troy.  I had both my kids at RO Beaumont and both of my L&D rooms had a tub in them.  The nurse mentioned being able to labor in the tub when I had my DD, but sitting in a hospital tub didn't sound very appealing to me.  I was also induced with both so I had to be on the monitors anyway.  They do have some rooms with cordless monitors though.

  • If you are considering a natural type birth at a hospital - I would consider The ABC Unit at Providence Southfield.  It is their Alternative Birth Center that focuses on a completely natural birth process, but is on the L&D floor if complications arise.  I started off in ABC with my 1st and was transferred and delivered and stay in ABC with my 2nd and loved both experiences.  They have large showers and laboring tubs (big enough for two) and queen beds in the rooms.  The also have birthing balls and rocking chairs for you to use.  My second delivery was really fast and only labored for an hour, but I spent the whole time in the tub and it was great.  Just something to consider, as the whole process the 2nd time around fully natural was amazing!!
  • The ABC unit sounds wonderful, but my OB only delivers at Beaumont Royal Oak. I really like them so I don't think I want to switch, but that might be a consideration for a future baby (we want one more)!

And if anyone else was curious about the answer to my question about Beaumont RO having a birthing tub, the answer is NO. Asked my OBGYN today and she said they don't. Sad face.
