Olive oil on baby's booty?

A friend told me to put olive oil on baby's bottom after a diaper change while he is still having those sticky, tar-like stools.

Has anyone else heard of this? It seems odd. I can't see how it would hurt though.

Re: Olive oil on baby's booty?

  • So it's easier to clean off I assume? I wouldn't do it, but not sure if it would hurt anything exactly.

  • yeah...I have heard people doing it and saying it is a great help with the meconium.
  • I got olive oil in my birthing kit for just this reason.  It's also a good way to protect your little one's bum.
  • My dermatologist says that olive oil is the closest thing to skin's natural oils and has me use it when my excema flairs up.  It would obviously have fewer chemicals in it than Vaseline, which is what most people recommend, so I don't see it doing any harm.
  • I think I'll try it.  I might toss in a few cloves of garlic, fresh rosemary and some parmesan cheese too.  Mmmmmm....

Why not "just spray some PAM in that general area?  (You have to admit it's a valid idea)"  Sorry, watched BabyMama too recently.

  • I'm still in 2nd tri so I'm butting in, but I've heard that is easier on the skin and makes it easier to remove the tar-like stools, as you mentioned.
  • BTW I'm totally not opposed to olive oil on a baby's booty, I've heard good things about using olive oil.  But is it sick and wrong that I got hungry for Italian food when I read this post?

  • yeah its good for your skin too!  I use olive oil soaps and lotions too because I have eczema.  It keeps the poop from sticking to the point you have to scrub them raw!  This tar poop should be about done before you leave the hospital I think.

Hahaha, me too.  Actually, I always do for some reason.  My aunt got me some "cradle cap" oil for the baby, and I opened the package and said "What?!"  And then was like "Oh, duh...cradle CAP!"
