Prenatal massage - pregnant w/twins

I'm pregnant with twins and will be about 20w this weekend and was looking to have a prenatal massage.  I just called to make an appointment and they have to call my dr. for approval as a precaution.

Just wondering if anyone else has had experience with this before?  Is there a risk associated with getting a massage that I'm not aware of?

The spa lady did tell me they've never had a dr. say no to a massage for someone with twins, but now I'm nervous?!

 Any thoughts?

  • You'll be fine.  Enjoy yourself.

  • It's probably just their policy since you're considered high risk. When I had one they just told me to mention it to my OB after the fact, just in case she doesn't want me getting them. I did and she's totally o.k with it.

    enjoy!

  • One of my BFs is a massage therapist and she also just asked me to check with my Dr before she gave me a prenatal massage.  My Dr was fine with it.

  • I am looking into having one done. I think that it is professional that they asked to get an okay first. Enjoy it!!!

  • I was told to ask the masseuse avoid my wrists and feet ~ something about pressure points and PTL. Otherwise they were fine, and sooooo awesome when bad sciatica kicks in.
  • Do it!! I did several with someone certified in preg. massage and they were wonderful!

  • I did one at 30 weeks and it was WONDERFUL! If it is a prenatal massage they should know what they are doing!  Enjoy!

  • I went to a LMT once a month during my 2nd and 3rd tris.  It worked wonders for my sciatica and always made me feel better.

  • Prenatal massages were the best! It felt so good to take the pressure off!  I had to have mine approved because I was on bedrest.

There are certain points that can bring on contractions (ankles, etc) but any good massage therapist would know what to avoid...

  • Thanks everyone!  That makes me feel a ton better, I do think they are just being cautious and CYA for them to get approval from the dr. first.  I'll make sure they don't hit any pressure points as you mentioned, this is a very reputable place that specializes in pregnant women, and they are all certified for prenatal.  Seems like I would be in good hands!

Thanks for the advice!!!!  I'm hoping to have several of these :)

  • I had one this past weekend and it was AWESOME!  They knew exactly how to get me comfortable because I wouldn't have wanted to lay on my back the whole time and she was great.  It was so relaxing.  Enjoy!
  • I had one at 38 weeks, only days before I was finally induced and it was so heavenly! I think I freaked the massage therapist out a little w/ how huge my belly was (esp. when DDs would kick and contort its shape!) but it was very relaxing!!

    Hope you enjoy yours!!!
