3rd Trimester

Any RH negatives out there

This is my second baby and last time I had to go through a 3 hr process inorder to get my Rhogam shot at the local hospital. My co-worker told me her friend just got the prescription filled at a pharmacy and had someone stick her in the but... Has anyone done this? Is it covered by insurance than or not? Going to call my pharmacy in the morning... I just do not want to take off of work to go to the hospital blood bank during their hours... I need to save my days...

Re: Any RH negatives out there

  • That sounds really weird, I have never heard of having to go to a blood bank to get a rhogam shot!  My dr always just had it in his office and it was no biggie.

  • I know right... Last time because the blood bank was closed I actually went L&D and a nurse gave it to me
  • My doctor gave me the shot at an office visit and said I would get another in the hospital while I was in labor.

  • do you go to a regular ob office ? they should just give it to you at your next appointment , either way a doctor would have to send a prescription to the pharmacy for you to be able to get it there,

  • I've always gotten my rhogam shot at the doctors office during my 28 week appointment. I will also get one after I deliver if baby is RH positive.

  • So I am the only one that has to go the hospital.... :(

  • I had to go pick mine up from the hospital pharmacy and my OB's office administered the shot. Thankfully the hospital is right across the street and it gave me something to do while waiting for my GTT blood draw so it wasn't a big hassle. I don't know why they do it that way though.

  • My Ob does do it at the hospital. (Which is right across the street.) Although, I do have to say it was only a shot. There was no 3 hour process involved in mine last time. I go this week for my 28 week shot this pregnancy and it should be the same way.

What does the blood bank have to do with it?

Your OB should be the one giving it to you. The hospital shouldn't be involved. It's just a shot.

Mine comes from the blood bank also. I have to wait for the blood bank to prep the paperwork for the shot, then the shot is given in the clinic. I only had to wait an hour though.

  • I just got mine in the office during a regular visit.

  • I got mine at my 28 week appointment. I guess I didn't think they would do it any other way. It kinda sounds like a pain to have to deal with blood banks and all that! Maybe you could ask your OB to order it in ahead of time?

  • May be its different in Canada but... The Rhogam is a blood product, hence why the blood bank is involved. In Canada the Pharmacy does not deal with blood products, laboratory medicine does. May be Pharmacies in the states deal with blood products. I had to go to the hospital to laboratory medicine while they made up the specific Rig that I needed. If you are getting it done at the doctors there must be a laboratory close by.

At my hospital it was a quick process, but would have been delayed if there was a rush at L&D as that is where they sent me to have the shot given. Maybe see if you can call ahead and see if they can have everything lined up for you when you get there.

  • Just lurking over here, but my sister had to actually go get hers from the pharmacy and bring it to her dr so they could give it to her there. Her insurance covered it just like normal. Maybe they would do that? I know some offices just don't keep it in the office for whatever reason. I had to go to the hospital for one a few weeks ago for bleeding because they don't keep them in the office unless they schedule you for one specifically.

  • My OB office changed the procedure to get it and it was a pain. I had an Outpatient Lab order to go and pick up the RhoGam at the hospital lab, then take it to the OB's office to be administered. Thankfully, the medical building and the hospital is connected, but I still had to sit and wait for the lab to get the vile.

  • I went to the hospital and had it done there. My dr doesn't do it at her office. But she just gave me the slip and they had everything at the hospital.

  • I've already had multiple Rhogam shots.  They do not do the shots at my OB office, I have to go to L&D.  The whole process is about an hour, longer if you go during busier afternoon hours.  It takes at least an hour because they have to draw my blood then send it down to the lab and get the shot made.  Fun times.

  • My ob office has them, like most of the others posted.

Just wanted to add that you only need the second Rhogam shot after labor if your baby has a positive blood type. I lucked out with our first as she came out O neg. Those are not pleasant shots so I was glad to have avoided one post partum.

  • I've had 4 RhoGam shots- 2 with my first pregnancy, 1 after I lost my second, and one with this one so far.  The ones at 28 weeks were done by my OB at his office, the other were following deliveries and were done at the hospital.  Having to go to the blood bank seems strange to me, but it probably has something to do with insurance.

The Rhogram shot is a blood product. They make it according to the antibodies that you have. Its not just a shot that everyone gets the same thing. I was given a card to put in my wallet about recieving a blood product that day.
