Tell me about diaper-free time

(Sorry this will have to be a bump-and-run) DS developed a mild diaper rash last weekend, and it's been pretty stubborn. We've tried using washcloths instead of wipes, A&D with aloe, Desitin, Butt Paste, Aquaphor and baby powder (corn starch). It will start to look like it's clearing up for a diaper or two, only to return. Since I'll be home with him this weekend, I want to see how going diaper free for a bit might help before we call the pedi. If you've done it, how do you prevent messes and how long do you recommend keeping the diaper off? TIA!

  • Have you ever tried Boudreaux's Butt Paste?  Works sooo good.

  • We have nice prefold cloth diapers that we put under DS when he had diaper free time(on the floor or in my arms). It as pretty evident when he was going to go poop, but peeing always took me by surprise. It really did help him diaper rash!

  • When dd had a horrible diaper rash, i thought for sure it was the wipes. but actually it was all the different ointments that caused it. Once i only used A&D, it started clearing up. But to answer your question;  my mom did it with DD when she was watching her.  she first put a burp cloth on her like a diaper and then wrapped her in a towel and then laid her on a towel. She was right with her in case she did start to pee.  It did help a lot.

  • We just do naked tummy time, or naked play time.  We put a blanket on the floor and one of her wetpads that we have for the changing table under her and let her hang out.  It's quite interesting, because, we've done this at least 5 times, and she has only peed once.  We usually let her air out for about 30min every few days or so (even without a rash).  She must not pee as often as we think!

  • I lay her down on puppy pee pads! They work really well.

  • I lay down a big thick fleece blanket and then put a doubled over towel on top of it. He almost always pees, but it is easy to put it all in the wash. He actually really likes to be naked, so I will do it when he is being fussy and nothing else helps. Some days it is only 10 minutes, some days I will let him play as long as he wants.

  • I will put him on a disposable changing pad (like the one on his changing table) and let him hang out under his gym...from anyway between 10-30 min every time he needs a diaper change.

He pees almost every time but as another poster said the cleanup is easy.

I only do this until the rash clears up.

This. We actually do nekky time a little bit every day too. It keeps the rash away, and he loves it. Also, for a stubborn rash, someone told me to do a baking soda bath. Just pour some baking soda in her bath water and let her sit for a bit, then do the bare bottom time. We had some really really stubborn rash when we were having tummy/diarrhea issues, and that cleared it up within a day or two. We also used plain lanolin like you would use for nipple cream, and that helped act as a moisture barrier to heal it up as well.

  • Triple Paste works the best for us for rashes.  We do naked tummy time, esp. at night after a bath.  Just lay a towel on the floor and let DS play for a while.  If you need to put a diaper on, just make sure the area is dry before you apply the diaper cream.  I have used a hair dryer set on cool and DS liked that.

If the rash has white patches, you might have yeast.  Call your doc.
