Anyones DH travel for work?

I just found out today my DH has to go to London until May.  He is probably leaving next Fri.  I'm so sad.  I'm going to miss him and sad that he will miss some of the fun baby stuff!  I was wondering if anyone else was in a similar situtation?

Re: Anyones DH travel for work?

  • :( I feel your pain, love.

My hubby travels and is gone until the end of June. He's been gone since December 26th. He is going to be too far for me to travel by car (which I have to do since we have a boxer dog) and has not even a day for a break between his jobs.

I'm sad, too, about him missing baby related stuff, but I know he has to work.

    Maybe we can be eachother's fill-in baby daddy's. :)

  • I'm so sorry. Will he be able to come back on weekends here and there? MH travels for work - he goes to SF every other week. He's gone only 4 days out of the week and it's kinda nice when he's gone bc it makes our time together extra special. However, I hate when he goes out of the country for longer trips. I'm sorry you're going through this.

  • Yes, DH  has been gone since November. We found out we were pregnant the day he left. He had only been home 2 weeks prior to that and was gone for 4 months before it 2 week visit home, which was suppose to be for good. This time he will be gone until April, then we do not know where the next job will be, most likely will be another out of state job again.

It is really hard in the beginning but I have gotten use ( if that  is the word) to him being gone honestly. You fall into a routine and it does get easier. Spend the next week together enjoying your self :)

  • Thanks girls!  I'm sorry for all the girls that have traveling DH's!  I'm hoping I'll get "use to it" soon enuf!  He can only come home if we foot the bill and its really expensive to fly from London to Cincy so he probably will not being coming home but we both have web cams so hopefully we can skype!

  • That's awful. I'm so sorry that your DH will be so far away for so long. I don't know how you women do it, especially those with military husbands.

I hope that May comes quickly for you.

  • MH travels often, usually M-F every week.  The joke is how did I even *get* pregnant since he's been traveling like this longer than a year Wink

That would be rough to be on my own 100% for months though.  I hope with his overseas assignment he gets to come home at least one long weekend to visit (or you can go visit before your travel is restricted).  MH may have to travel every week for a new account he may be moving to, with us eventually moving to the East coast.  Totally NOT what I want to do.  I'm a midwestern girl dangit.  Plus I know no one in DE or Pittsburgh.

  • That sucks that they wont pay for a couple trips home. DH's last job was like that and it just wasn't possible on our budget either. Thankfully this new company pays for a trip home once a month. He gets to come home for 2 days every month. Still sucks cause I have to work weekends but it is better then caming like we did the last time he was gone.

It does get easier, at least for me it does for me and will he definitely be home when the baby is close to being due? That is my biggest worry that DH will miss the birth. They can come at any moment and I am so afraid he wont be able to get here in time, a flight wont be available or to long to drive....just really bothers me.

  • DH and I moved when I was pregnant with DD.  He had to move (about 1000mi) first, then I followed about 2-3 months later.  We both got a webcam and would eat dinner together "on the phone".  You can use Skype or others, but we used GoogleTalk.  It's free.  Our webcams are nice ones and were about $40 each.  Some computers have built in.

This. I'm so sorry. I hope the time passes quickly for BOTH of you!

  • Mine doesn't just yet, but he is applying for a position in his company that will require "deployments" to Iraq and Afghanistan. Its going to be hard, but it will mean lots of savings and a great secure future for or little guy and ourselves.

(and he works in intelligence, just fyi no craziness)

  • Mine used to travel for 2 1/2 months at a time.  It sucked, especially since the phone service where he went was terrible, and he had no internet access.

I'm sorry your DH will be away - I'm sure it's harder being pregnant!  Can you take some trips to visit friends and family?  That always made time pass faster for me.

    Hang in there!

  • With my first pregnancy, DH was working out of NYC, so I only saw him on the weekends. It does stink that he misses seeing you "grow" and you have to be alone most of the time. But at least he will be with you the last few months :) I was worried my husband wasn't going to be there for the birth.

Bottom line, you make it work and you survive.
