Preschool ?

So this whole preschool thing is stressing me out. I've applied at basically 5 schools because I was paranoid that he wouldn't get in since I'm not a member of any church here in Raleigh and the church I am a member of is in Chapel Hill and that's too far to go everyday. So far I know he's gotten into 3 and wait listed at 1 and I hear back from the last one tomorrow.... I like them all, obviously, or I wouldn't have applied. HOW DO I PICK! Closest to home? Best program even if its the furtherest away? What were your deciding factors in sending your child to the preschool they go to?

Re: Preschool ?

  • Well I picked based on a few things, close to home was important because I wanted to maximize the time alone I have! So I didn't want 30 minutes of my time taken up with driving.

I talked to a few people and went to an open house at where we are now and liked what they had to say and that the class sizes/ratio's were smaller. For her 2 year class starting in Sept it is 8 kids to 2 teachers. They also have a music specialist on staff and a body/movement specialist. I just liked what they had to offer, and that the price we not way above the others, but in line with what seemed reasonable.

  • Distance to home was #1.  Closely followed by the size of her class, flexibility with the teachers/director and my general intuition (and how E seemed to react).  We only visited two, but I was able to make a choice without hesitation.

  • Yikes, did you pay registration fees at all 5?

I narrowed it down to 2 and visited both.  Close to home was an important factor, since if they only go for 3 hours, I didn't want to spend it all in the car, although I ended up going with the farther away of the 2 (15 min drive) since I just liked it better.  It was just a gut thing for me.  This particular preschool's program just seemed a better fit for Liam's personality.  Also, I personally didn't want to be required to do any volunteering in the classroom, which the other school required.

  • Yes I did pay registration fees at all of them, you get it back if they don't get in so it wasn't a big deal.
  • I mostly decided based on location, how it was rated, and the feel I got from the school.  I didn't want something too far away so that I or our nanny weren't spending all our time in the car (and then, also taking away from play time for Claire).  I started by looking only in Wake Forest.  We knew we wanted a Montessori so that helped narrow it down.  The first one I wasn't thrilled with and was glad I visited the second.  It was definitely more what I was looking for.  I looked early enough that I only had to apply to the one school since I was already told she'd get in since most people hadn't applied yet.  So that's where she's going.  I suppose my ultimate decision was based on how I felt about the school and interactions I think Natalie will get there.
