Parenting after 35

1 year appt and bottle ?

L is doing awesome. Height is 29.5 (60%) weight was 22.4 (35%) and head was 90%! The pedi wants to refer him to a speech therapist for eating issues (he chokes at least once a meal on something- food, water, spit, his own breath...) It doesn't phase him at all, but scares the crap outta me!

We got the talk about ditching the bottle, she said we need to phase it out quickly and that he should be completely off it within a month. Eeekkk!

So I need suggestions on the easiest way to do this... L totally uses his bottle as a comfort object at night, and he doesn't have any other 'lovey' or even something that he shows a preference too. How in the world do I transition him from a bottle as a security item to something else??

Re: 1 year appt and bottle ?

  • When I asked my prediatrician about the bottle,he said as long as they are off by age 2. I wonder why so many mixed signals from different dr's.

Sorry no advice, haven't gotten there et, but I guess I should at least start. She takes sippy for water but hates the milk in it.

  • No advice, but ouch at the ripping off bandaide method! I hope it goes well and isn't too frustrating for everyone.

  • Logan was VERY attached to his bottle so I was a little worried that it was going to take some time getting him off of it. I bought a sippy cup with a silicone spout. I've come to realize that it's not as much the bottle that he was attached to as what was IN the bottle. He gets just as excited when he gets formula in the sippy cup!

Just taking away the bottle and giving a cup is what worked for us.

  • I gave Gracie the bottle for a week or so after her one year appt. I then gave her a sippy cup before bed. I was shocked at how well she took it. Now, we just give her a small cup of milk and a little snack before bed. She is really attached to her blanket and that has taken the place of her bottle as a comfort item.

  • 18 month appt and my pedi isn't concerned he's still getting two bottles a day but he still doesn't eat much in the way of solids so that is a factor for us not pushing it. He was more concerned about making sure we brush his teeth after drinking his bottle and stuff like that. We practice a lot with the sippy and I don't think he will freak out when we replace it for the bottle. He probably won't drink as much which is why we are still doing the bottle.

  • My pedi's been dogging me about switching to sippy cups since about 9 mo, and we're still on the bottle at least once a day or so.  He's dropped to the 10th percentile and is a very picky eater, so I certainly don't want to shortchange his milk intake.  If I just do sippies, he gets maybe half of what he should each day.

I've found the only kind he'll tolerate are the straw sippy types.. specifically those cheap Take and Toss ones.  But he makes a huge mess with them too.

I am still giving him milk at bedtime and just making sure we brush his teeth well.  Which is another battle, but he likes the flouride-free toothpaste now so it's a bit easier there.

What is she going to do if he's not off the bottle in a month? Nothing. Pediatricians aren't the bosses, so don't do anything that doesn't feel right to you. That being said my DD is all about the Munchkin insulated straw sippy and carries it around like a "lovey."

  • I ditched the bottle and now Aaron won't drink milk.  He ONLY took it in a bottle. He'll drink water out of a sippy but that's it.

    *sigh*

Every so often I offer him milk in a sippy and he'll take a few sips and then that's it. I plan to ask about this at his 18 month visit on the 15th.

  • We switched Sarah one meal at a time and she has been drinking milk from a sippy four times daily since she was 12 months. It was so easy that I really don't have any advice, we just switched and that was it.

  • No advice, sorry!  Miller is not into the sippy cup yet.  We have tried, and he will use it if we give it to him like a bottle.  Right now we are transitioning to whole milk, so when that is complete we will attack the sippy.  Too much change at once will freak him out!

  • With my daughter (now 3) I switched from bottle/formula to sippy/milk all at once  right after she turned 1.  I am a rip off the band aid personality so I thought I would see how it went.  She was a  little sad for a couple of nights, but I just gave her extra snuggles and it went well.  My son turns 1 on Sunday and I plan to do the same right after his 1 year appt.  We'll see.
