Felt onesies help (Kathy!)

My cousin is having the first great-grandchild in our family and I want to make some onesies with the felt designs.  I've got the supplies--onesies, plenty of felt, felt glue and thread.  Can you share with me your process?  And I need help on measurements.  How far from the neckline is the waist of an infant?  I bought 3-6 month onesies if that makes a difference.  I just have nothing to compare it to and don't want to make the appliques too long.  I'm planning a giraffe, truck, J (his name is Jaden), tie and don't know what to do for the last one.  Maybe a whale?  I don't know if they're doing his room in or anything like that, but messaged my cousin.  TIA!

    Process(my version):

    Wash shirts and dry without fabric softener.  I sometimes ironed them a little to get a good surface to work on.

    Cut a piece of Wonder Under the size of your piece of felt (or the size of your design if you want to save a lil(if you don't have it, you might want to get some at hobby lobby or JoAnne's or even walmart if yours carries fabric).

    Iron your WU to the back of your felt, no steam (follow directions on WU wrapper).

    Cut out your pattern out.   Flip felt over so you have your WU paper backing facing up.  Put your pattern on it face down (aka backwards).  Trace around pattern and cut it out.  I use a sharpie rather than a pencil, which gets all over stuff.  Peel paper backing off.

    Position felt onto shirt (face up).  I usually position stuff between the armpits (if you lay the shirt out, you will see).  Cover with a pressing cloth, and then iron WITH steam for a few seconds.  Let cool.

    Using embroidery floss and needle, starting with a knot on the inside edge, so an in-out stitch all the way around, ending with a knot on the inside.  Turn shirt inside out.  Trim any stray floss.  Cut a piece of fusible interfacing(also from HL, J, or WM--get the kind for lightweight fabrics, you just need something to cover the stitching and so it won't scratch baby) big enough to cover the stitching and then iron that on with a pressing cloth with steam.  Turn inside out, iron any wrinkles out of the shirt, and voila!

    Make sure to tell the recipient to wash them turned inside out.

    Hope that helps!

    I don't think Kathy uses WU or FI, but I think they really help.  If you go to HL, check their website for a printable coupon.
