Tips/Ideas from any sewers out there

I never wanted to store my wedding dress stored in a box (they remind me of coffins)...I don't imagine that if I have a daughter she'll ever want to wear it. I have stored and saved the veil as an heirloom.

I always said that I would remove the crystals and make a necklace for myself and my mom. And then use the fabric to make a christening gown for future LOs. (Maybe I can make a garter, and a couple hankies too).

Now my dress hangs on the back of our guest room door and I feel so overwhelmed with where to start. I think the first cut will be the hardest. Every once and a while I think that I should just sell it...but that breaks my heart. Any ideas?

I am currently looking at services to turn my wedding dress into a quilt for the baby.  They will use pieces to create a "cow jumped over a moon" type of quilt.  It was a little bit of a different spin on the christening gown, but I really liked the idea of the quilt or favorite blanket for our LO.  My dress is a hard material to work with, so I am outsourcing!  Smile

  • Outsourcing might be a good idea. I don't know if I can bring myself to cut it.Getting a pro who is unattached might make things easier.

I would love to see pics of the quilt when it is done!

  • My grandmother's has been lent out to 3 different brides. My dress isn't anything special, but I had it preserved because I couldn't bear to get rid of it. I have my christening gown for my kids to wear. I'd second the recommendation of having it made. I am a quilter but could never cut into my own wedding dress. Plus the materials they are made out of are often slippery and more difficult to work with (I stick with cottons).

  • I just googled and came up with a few places. You could also do an Etsy alchemy request or just approach a shop that does christening gowns. I've seen quilts, pillows and here are a few other suggestions...

I've also seen a bride (wish I could remember who), have it altered and dyed to be a party dress. I thought that was pretty cool.

ETA: I saw another suggestion of turning parts of a dress into a ring pillow and a lining for a basket. One suggested doll clothes. Another one I thought was sweet was a hankerchief...might be cool to do for a future family event. I'm not sure about the outer fabric, but I bet linings would be good for that as well. Especially if you keep a note in the box saying who originally had the dress and how it's been used through the years (with pictures).

Another site suggested that when the dress is all cut up and done, to save any special embellishments, buttons, beads and any scraps 4x4 or larger for future projects. It might be cool to give a future bride or mom-to-be the option of going through a little box of things she could add to her own dress or child's christening gown.

  • Wow, I'm finding quite a few things...

Another option could be a handbag or a cute purse for when you go to special events, or even just go out.

I would suggest avoiding cuts right away, and instead just take it all apart via the seems. It might be easier to create when you're working with raw materials instead of a whole dress.

  • I want to do something with mine, too, but I am terrified to commit!! I swore through my engagement that I would sell it right after the wedding, and I would never care about keeping it!!! I just can't bring myself to decide now, though!! I may just get it preserved to avoid the decision!
