When to have the baby shower?

Wondering what to do...My husband and I do not plan to find out what we are having. This is the first child that we are expecting (miscarrried twins in June and July 2010) I am currantly 17w1d along. So as most of you know...we would obviously be starting from scratch and need all the things for baby. We are debating if it would be best to have it first because we are in need if all the items or wait until after so that the shower can be gender directed! The other option was to find out what the gender is...but that is no fun :)

  Thank you for your thoughts!

Re: When to have the baby shower?

  • sorry about your losses.

we do not plan on finding out the sex either, but plan to register for gender neutral items so we can use them again for our second baby.

  • I am sorry to hear about your previous losses. I am about a week behind you (16 weeks). I think I am going to have my shower in the end of April or the beginning of May. I don't want to be too far along that I feel uncomfortable. We are not finding out the sex either. I actually am hoping it is a good thing because then I will get more practical items, rather than being inundated with blue or pink baby clothes. I think that having it before the baby is born without knowing the sex is totally acceptable. There are so many gender neutral items available, I don't think it would be hard for people to find you gifts. You can buy the fun boy or girl stuff after baby arrives :)

  • We are not finding out either (Go Team Green!) and this will be our first as well!  We're having our showers before (we're having two - one in Nebraska where our immediate families live and one here in Chicago where we and my extended family and our friends live).  We figured that there's not really too much that is gender specific that we need (besides some clothing, and most gender specific clothing only comes after 3 - 6 mo anyway IMO).  We don't want really want much of anything to be gender specific because we plan on having more and don't want to have to buy some stuff all over again!

  • The stuff that you really need would be gender neutral so finding out the sex shouldn't really effect that. You'll probably get gift cards that you can use to buy gender specific clothing with.

We are not finding out and will have a shower around 30 weeks.

  • I'm so sorry for your losses.

I would register for gender neutral items and gift cards, and then I'd have my shower before the baby gets here.  Gender neutral items are great for being used for the next LO, and then you'll have some gift cards to go out and get cute stuff after the baby is here!

    Good luck!

  • I am Team-Finding out, but I think you can still have a shower before. Just register for gender neutral things like Pack & play, car seat, boppy, bottles, bibs, bouncers... I'm sure if you go to target, BBB, BRU you will see how many THINGS babies need and that you dont need it, or probably wont want it all to be blue or pink. Just keep in mind, bottle warmers & washclothes dont really need to be gender specific. You can always get the cute boy stuff & frilly girl stuff after the baby comes, but you can put a pretty good dent in all of the other baby stuff before LO arrives.

  • I am sorry for your losses.

We didn't find out with DS and still have all his gender neutral stuff.  With this baby, we're using all of that stuff.  Its probably best to do that.  There's a lot of cute gender neutral stuff out there.  If you wait til after the baby is born, you may not have everything you need.  Then you'd have to run out and buy it yourself so there wouldn't be much of a need for it at a shower.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I think two months prior is a good time (around 30-33 weeks).

  • You could purchase the necessary items for a newborn yourself (bassinet, co-sleeper, moses basket etc., simple clothing, feeding stuff...) and have the shower soon after the birth.

Or, register for gender neutral items only, and hten purchase your gender specific clothes and other items yourself afterwards. The nice thing about us having babies when we are is just 6 months or so afterwards, is Christmas! Every 6 months the baby will get a new round of clothes and items from family. Pretty convenient! Any of the big stuff that you want to wait to purchase becasue of gender, i.e. large furniture, crib bedding, decor, and other items, you could wait on those until Christmas time.

  • I'm so sorry about your losses, but congrats for your LO on the way!

Honestly, you can have your shower as late as you want.  Like others, you can register for gender neutral items with no issues.

I have to travel for one of my showers, so that will be in May when I am 32.5 weeks along.  My friends have discussed a shower for me here where we live, and that one is supposed to be in June, probably 2 or 3 weeks before the baby is due.

  • My hubby and I are finding out the gender, but we are mainly registering for neutral stuff so we can use it no matter what the next baby is.  I think mine are going to be in mid-May, partly because I'm not even free until then!  My cousins were both team green and got some adorable stuff before the babies came along, then once the babies were born, they supplemented with a few gender specific items.  :)
