3rd Trimester

One Born Every Minute

I caught this on Lifetime last night. I think it's a great show! With all due respect to you natural birth dirty hippies *ahem*... moms... (kidding) I wanted to punch that one couple in the face. It's cool that you want a natural birth but there's not need to sh*t on the nurse like that.

If you haven't seen it and this is your first time around the block (it's mine), or even if it's not, it was entertaining and it kinda got me geared up for this whole pushing-a-kid-out thing.

  • I loved the show, and totally agree with you that couple drove me crazy I think that they could have been a lot nicer to the nurse she was only trying to help and make suggestions

GAH! sorry. I will waddle over there now with my head hung in shame! Haha. Before I hit 'post' I thought to myself - "Self, just click onto the second page. Just do it." But then I didn't.

No big deal. It was from last night. And your post is for the morning/lunchtime people! I just wanted to add my post in so others can read it too.

  • I admit that natural birthing couple looked ridiculous and annoying on the show...BUT...there was no need for that nurse to try to micro-manage every aspect of their labor. Normal, uncomplicated labor doesn't need to be monitored and checked 8 bazillion times.

  • I've been seeing all the posts on it since last night, but we didn't catch it then.  I had DH look for it to download and he said it's in it's 2nd season?!  I thought last night was the premier episode, and makes me wonder if he's downloading the right showe for me?!

  • I think it's a welcome departure from the ones on TLC.  They always seem so DATED.  This one is fresh and a whole lot more realistic!.  I love the nurses - the story where they were talking about the old lady with chlamydia - LMAO!

I didn't check it out too closely, but it looks like YouTube has some earlier episodes of it?  Maybe it IS the second season.

Nope, last night was the premier. It's going to be on every Tuesday.

I didn't get that impression at all. It is the nurse's job to be concerned for the welfar of mom and baby. I think she was just trying to do that. It would be hard to have NO interference in your natural birth at a hospital. And add to that she was about 42 weeks. I thought the nurse was reasonable. I don't get why the couple was at a hospital if they were so set on no help.

Awesome.. score one for me... now I have to figure out how to DL the correct one!!!  Maybe there was a British version or something, I find a lot of shows start there first and then get remade here (ie The Office, Top Gear etc)... Wish me luck!!

Yes.  If it was a situation where she was 38-40 weeks and went into labor, I can understand them being irritated with the nurse wanting to butt in so much with internals and whatnot.  But being 42 weeks, the nurse was just doing her job to make sure that the long labor wasn't putting any stress on their baby.  I think she was very understanding in the fact that they wanted a natural labor, but they needed to be understanding as well that the nurse was looking out for mom AND baby.

  • The husband of that natural birth couple was driving me bananas!  I'm hoping for a natural birth myself, but geez, he was really annoying.  Also their nurse was obviously one of the more experienced people there and they were really rude to her.
  • I just checked youtube and there are episodes but it is from England so good call on taking this idea from the Brits.  I agree, it's nice to have a funnier and slightly edgier version because I don't really like those "fluffy" baby shows with the soothing music.  Looking forward to more episodes and hope DH will watch it with me.
  • can't wait for my date with the Tivo tonight!

Oh, and I will NOT be shitting on any of the nurses present for my L and D.

I was wondering the same thing. Was there a reason a couple so set on no interference at all wouldn't just do a home birth or a birthing center?

  • Loved the dental hygienist / her husband...hoping for her birth story - quick and didn't look awful...here's to wishful thinking =)

  • the natural lady was in labor for 18 hours. there IS a reason to check her cervix, see how close she was getting and there was a reason to monitor her. that is a decent amount of time to be in labor and if she's not getting any readings on the baby's heart rate, she has no idea if the baby is in distress

Sometimes insurance covers different things differently... They may not want to pay if the birth is at home.  And they may not have a birthing center in their area... I didn't watch the show.  Just a thought.

  • This post made me crack up!  My husband and I watched this show last night and was laughing so hard the entire time!! I almost wet my paints when the one mom was struggling so hard to reach her cell phone becasue that is totaly how I am now a days.  This show did get my husband and I excited (nervous) for our baby girl to come into the world!!

  • I would love to be able to do a natural birth. I think I'm too much of a wimp for that but I want as natural as I can. No induction, no cutting, Epi after 6 cm if at all. They really pissed me off too because they were so focused on their birth plan that they didn't have any flexibility at all. They should have gone in with the mentality of this is how we want it but we know it might have to change for the health of the baby. The nurse was only doing her job and they treated her like crap. When they were in the shower she even talked to the doula and asked what she could do to help. Its not like she is new to this. She had her children naturally and she said she is all for natural birth. But the doula and the couple need to be realistic. If you are in labor for 18 hours and there isn't any monitoring going on then they have no idea if the baby is ok. Their first priority should have been their child. NOT the birth plan.

LOL, that was just too much. And what were they doing in the shower all those times?...

I hated how rude they were to the nurse.

It seemed that they edited the time line for purposes of telling the story, so it may have seemed like the RN was trying to monitor them constantly, but she was probably only doing it every couple of hours after seeing the mom struggle for so long. And, she seemed to really be trying to work with the midwife and the couple, but as she said, they just saw her as an adversary and not there to help them with her experience. And at 42 weeks, I think it is reasonable to have a monitor checking out that the baby is not in distress. Eh, to each his/her own - especially for those "extreme livers".

42wks and 18hours labor....yes, the mother needs to be checked on to make sure baby is not distressing. She couldn't get any good readings on what her body was doing. The nurse wasn't micro-managing because if she was she wouldn't have asked the doula what she can do to help them.
