My husband and I are 16 weeks pregnant with twins and are moving in two weeks to Edwardsburg, MI. My husband took a new job near South Bend, IN so we need to find a OB ASAP!!! I'm so upset to be leaving my current OB because she is the best and really knows about twin deliveries. Does anyone have any great OB references??? I will have to have a C-section so I'm concerned about this. We were told that the new St. Joseph hospital is a state of the art hospital and have a new maternity wing. Any and all information about the hospital and OB reccomendations is greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,

Re: Help...I need to find a new ob ASAP
Congratulations! I know it must be difficult to move OBs in the middle of a pregnancy.
I absolutely LOVE my OB (Dr. Kirsch at Women's Reproductive Medicine). Many of my family and friends have switched to her after my experience and meeting her. She's amazing. She is a Memorial Medical Group doctor and delivers at Memorial though.
IMO, I would not switch to St. Joe hospital. Yes, it is brand new so the building itself is really nice, but after my cousin's experience delivering there, I wouldn't want to. That could have been the fault of her midwife though and not the hospital. Most of Memorial hospital has been newly renovated. The L&D floor and Mother/Baby floor was in the final stages of being renovated when I had DD two years ago. It is very nice and the L&D suites are spacious and every room has a jacuzzi tub. Memorial also has the regional referral NICU in case your twins would need these services (hopefully not!).
I hope I don't sound pushy with my opinion about Memorial. Since you are not from the area, I just wanted you to know of another option even if it technically is an older hospital, it's a very nice one!
I loved my ob resident but she has since moved on out of the residency program. However Dr. MacGregor did my c-section and he was absolutely wonderful. We will be using them for any future pregnancies. The practice name is Houser-Norberg-MacGregor (totally sounds like a law firm).
I also agree with the previous poster about Memorial even though St. Joe will be closer to Edwardsburg. Each person has their personal preference but I was highly impressed with the professionalism of the Memorial staff (L&D nurses and doctors, lactation dept, and NICU) after my DS#2 was born and transferred to the NICU, emotional breakdowns and all.
I think Elkhart and Mishawaka are about the same distance from Edwardsburg (about 20 minutes), and South Bend is just a little bit further (like 25 minutes). It won't make a huge difference if you are delivering in the summer.
I go to Dr. Starla Graber at River Oaks OB in Elkhart. I absolutely love her and all of the other OB's at her office (Dr. Graber is my favorite, but I also really like Dr. Tim Morgan. I'd totally feel comfortable if she one day handed me over to him!). Their office also handles high-risk pregnancies (I have GD, and many practices would have handed me over to someone else, but they kept me!).
They have a separate office for GYN patients in Elkhart, but they operate their OB office out of Elkhart General Hospital. I really like that I'm right at the hospital for all of my appointments, in case anything ever came up - I would walk right into L&D.
My L&D experience at Elkhart General was also really good. Their rooms are really, really nice - I felt comfortable the entire time.
My SIL delivered at Memorial in South Bend about 2.5 years ago, and I was completely disgusted. Their building was completely torn apart (we actually had to walk through a construction zone), which I can look past, but I cannot look past the way her post-birth was handled. She had a c-section, and the ENTIRE family rushed into the surgery recovery room as she was being wheeled in - she was still half out-of-it. Like, she hadn't even held her daughter yet and six grandparents were fighting over the kid (there were 10 of us total that all went in). The nurses just stood by and watched, not telling us to leave or limiting the number of people. I didn't think anything of it at the time, but after having my daughter, the thought of that many people barging in immediately afterward, before I could even hold my daughter (let alone nurse her!), makes my blood boil.
My DH and I spent a full hour after my c-section by ourselves (with very un-intrusive nurses) in a recovery room - it's Elkhart General's policy to not let anyone in the recovery room and they strictly enforce it. I spent that hour nursing my daughter and just breathing her and the entire experience in. It is truly one of the best hours of my life - it was so quiet and peaceful and full of love. I honestly cry happy tears thinking about it, and sad tears for my SIL thinking how awful the hour after her delivery was.
I'm sure everyone's experience at Memorial is different and maybe the nurses with my SIL were shotty nurses and not doing their jobs, but it was enough for me to be left with a bad taste in my mouth.
I had to see an MFM at the new St. Joe Hospital and was really happy with her. I have one friend who delivered there in an emergency situation (she was 34 weeks pregnant and out shopping in Mishawaka when she started hemorrhaging), and she was happy with her experience, especially given the situation (not her doctor, not the hospital where she delivered her other two kids, a new hospital in general, an hour from home, etc). But like PP said, I'm sure there are people who have had bad experiences there as well!
It's so hard to tell what your experience is going to be like, since everyone's is different! Plus, it is SO dependent on the nurses that you get!
I would just recommend that you test out drive times to those three hospitals and take a tour of their L&D departments!! It sounds like you have good rec's for OB's at both Memorial and Elkhart!! :-)
BTW, Edwardsburg... LUNKER'S. Their breadsticks are to-die-for. I recommend eating there OFTEN. :-)
Welcome to the area and congrats on your twins!
Ditto all this!
Congrats on twins and the new job for your DH. A lot of big changes coming up for you!
