Re: Spelling Question

  • Generally I've seen it with 2L's but 1L still looks fine.

  • I know people with this name who use either spellings. I tend to like traditional spelling and dislike when people mess with spelling. But I don't get my feathers ruffled over Alison with one L.
  • Lol, technically, Alison is the oldest, most traditional spelling.

Most don't realize this and, truly, both spellings are equally acceptable today.

eta: fwiw, in the UK, Alison is the more commonly seen spelling.

  • I prefer 1 L, personally, but when I asked this same question a few months ago, people voted something like 85% for 2 L's.

  • Everyone I have known with this name spells it with 2 L's.  I also know a girl who spelled her name Allyson and I thought it looked nice too.

  • Both are correct, but since Alison/Allison came from the name, Alice, I vote for one L.

  • I have a family member named Allison.

However, I prefer the french spelling of Alicenne over both of the spellings on your poll. DH is French and I would LOVE to name our daughter Alicenne nn Allie, but like I said, we already have a family member with the name.

  • My SIL is an Allyson - we usually always call her Ally and she refers to herself as that.  Ally stands alone as more of a nn than Alli or Ali - just something to keep in mind.

  • This is my name. I do believe it's more common with two "L"s, however, it's just as acceptable with one. I do prefer it with two because when shortened to Alli/Allie/Ally, it looks more complete, whereas Ali makes me want to say All-ee, like Muhommed Ali.
  • This is simply a matter of preference. Both are correct and socially acceptable.

As a general rule, I prefer the older, more traditional spelling. But if I was to name my daughter this, it would be Allison. This is mostly because I think most people (in the U.S., at least), assume the double L spelling, unless told differently.

It may not be a big deal to you, but I think if I can save her the .6 seconds it takes to say "Alison with one L", I will do it.
