In light of the "no vaccines" post from yesterday....

and some of the misinformation tossed about therein, I'll XP this here as well:

Dr. Paul Offit is on Colbert tonight.  He is inventor of the rotavirus vaccine, director of CHOP's Vaccine Education Center, and my hero (lol).

Also, here is an EXCELLENT interview with him, largely about people's fears of vaccines:

Re: In light of the "no vaccines" post from yesterday....

  • I didn't buy into the idea that vaccines cause autism. Having a child with autism it never struck me as vaccines being the catalyst. My kids get all of their shots on schedule when they are required/needed. I'm not pleased with those that send their children to school without vaccines. That might be someone else's choice not to vaccinate but it puts everyone else's kids at risk too.

  • I love me some Colbert!

  • I'm glad you posted this. I actually made a post about vaccines on the Feb 2011 board. It wasn't to start a debate or ask what people thought about vaccines, I was simply venting about how the hospital administrator got upset with me when I did not sign any of the paperwork giving permission to vaccinate me and baby. I didn't fail to sign them because I don't want them, I simply wanted more information from a professional health professional and hadn't had a chance to discuss it yet. She was extremely upset and kept pressuring me to sign by the time our interview was over. I finally just told her no and that I would bring the paperwork when I came in for labor. What a hassle!

To me, it's a personal choice. I don't have any judgments against either side.

  • I was thinking about that vaccine post today and why people are so afraid of vaccines.  Sometimes I think that, as a society, we do not remember how horrible some of the diseases we vaccinate against were.  We just don't see these diseases anymore.  It would be so horrible to watch a child become disabled or die because they were exposed to one of these diseases.  My Dad still tells me stories about kids in his neighborhood who were crippled from polio and how terrified his parents were of the children catching it.  I think it's wonderful that parents don't have to worry about many of these diseases anymore.

  • Great article.

Non-vaccinating parents give me a kind of rage I reserve for people that play dice with children's lives.

  • Well...I read that whole post yesterday and I really think that it's not just about the whole autism link. When I was 17, I got a Hep B booster. Literally a few days later, I had a severe autoimmune reaction that pretty much robbed two years of my life. I had a bunch of symptoms that made doctors think I either developed Lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis, as well as other things they were looking into.

I was seen by specialists who study the links between vaccines and autoimmune reactions and trust me, they are not that uncommon.

For two years, I was put on steroids, methotrexate, as well as other medications and I was in constant pain. All the doctors told me that I might go into remission but would likely be sick for the rest of my life.

Eventually symptoms subsided and somewhat miraculously my bloodwork changed back to normal. That was over 10 years ago and I haven't had any issues since but STILL, I am very careful about vaccines now, especially with my son.

Do we have any proof that he could react in a similar way? No. But we ARE spacing out his vaccines and he has not had the Hep B because I worry that somehow he may have inherited my sensitivity to it. Chances are he would be fine with ALL the vaccines but I myself know what it's like to be that 1 in 3000 or whatever number it is.

It's not a personal choice when you make a decision that could endanger the health of everyone in your community.  I don't judge people who parent differently than me when it comes to things like breastfeeding or cloth diapering.  But when your actions potentially put my child at risk?  Yeah, I get to judge.

Agreed.  People who are anti-vax give me extreme rage. I can hardly contain myself.  It is NOT a personal decision.  It's a decision that messes with other people's safety and the safety of our society as a whole.  It's just plain ignorant to not vaccinate your child!!

I take it you didn't read the interview. Go read Offit's answer to the question about herd immunity. No vaccine is 100% effective, but if enough of the population is immunized, there is virtually complete immunity.

I think it's a lot like the flu shot. The shot itself only protects against 3-5 strains at the time. It doesn't automatically protect against the other hundreds that are out there. Just because you've been vaccinated doesn't mean you are 100% protected, no matter what, no questions asked. What if someone near you coughs, has a strain of something the vaccine you got doesn't work against? It still means you could get sick. In order to protect everyone, everyone needs to get their shots.

"If vaccines work, why do you fear my un-vaccinated child?"

    Oh FFS.

First of all, my newborn won't be vaccinated.  It takes time for a child to be completely vaccinated.  If your non-vaxed kid gets pertussis and exposes my newborn, I could end up in the hospital with a child who dies because they were too young to get their vaccine.

Second, there are members of society who are especially dependent on others getting vaccinated because their immune systems aren't as strong as the rest of ours.  New babies, children and adults with compromised immune systems due to illness, the elderly, etc.  Herd immunity protects them.

Third, no vaccine is 100% effective.  In any outbreak, there will be some people who got vaccinated who will get sick.  Outbreaks will be far less likely to occur if everyone gets their vaccines in the first place.  Vaccines are most effective when everyone gets them and their is no weak link for a virus to exploit.  Your non-vaxed kid is the weak link.

Fourth, the only reason you get to be so confident about not vaccinating your child is because the rest of us are doing it.  We are doing our part to maintain herd immunity in the community.  You are reaping the benefits without doing your part to contribute.  When that happens enough, herd immunity starts to deteriorate.  And people are already getting sick and dying because of it. So yeah, I would call that something to worry about.

  • Did it get deleted? I went looking for it and could not find it.

I am all for vaccines, my issue is how many a tiny baby gets at one time. Plus so many are combined now and if there is a reaction you have no idea which one caused it. My plan is to vaccinate (except for rotovirus) but on the Dr. Sears schedule (delayed). I will also delay the CP vax until closer to school time.

  •  Since DD was 1, She has only gotten 1 vaccine at a time, we go back every two weeks to make sure she is up to date.  We chose to do that with her b/c every time she would get a round of shots she would cry for two days straight and run high fevers.  I do fear a negative reaction to immunizations.  But I fear things like this more.

Iris, you give me hope that there are in fact people out there that understand science.

I'm terrified that my baby will get pertussis. It's had several outbreaks in my province. DH and I will get our boosters, but that can't save my child from the people in the doctor's office, grocery store, etc. that choose to expose him to a life-threatening disease for no reason other than sheer ignorance and fear.

  • I am very glad that this is coming up as I am having this debate in my own head.:-)  I do think that vaccines are a good thing, however like a PP i am concerned with the amount of different ones given at once and the timing.

My experience comes from the veterinary field and before you hang me up for comparing children to pets hear me out.  Over the years studies have shown that the same vaccines we have been giving for years on a yearly basis are actually good for much longer.  A vaccine is supposed to cause an immune response, thus it can bring out things that have been underlying.  Does the vaccine cause the problem, probably not, but it can allow a problem to come out.  The response is timed the same way as when you get a virus, generally after exposure it is 7 to 14 days before the response.  I have a dog that had a small round mark on her belly that became cancer 14 days to the day after getting all of her vaccines at once.  I do still vaccinate my pets, I just do it in a more educated and informed way.  Do I want people to not vaccinate their pets for Rabies, absolutely not, I even have the pre-exposure vaccines and get my titers checked on a regular basis, I also get tetnus boosters in case I get bit.

So my LO will be vaccinated, but not for everything and not all at once.  I am glad to hear that you have to sign something to have vaccines done at the hospital, I am a little uneasy with the baby being treated or vaccinated or what ever without me being there.

I also do believe that it is irresponsible to not vaccinate and does put the rest of society at risk.

Like a PP I saw someone get very sick from the HPV vaccine, so it is a delicate balance to do what is good for yourself and what is good for society.

  • Iris, thank you for having more patience than I did at 1 in the morning.  lol.

My issue is that it is too much on an infants body at one time. Also the reaction issue. I would much rather they get all the vaccines needed just not as many at one sitting.

    Exactly.

My baby won't have the MMR vaccine until she's over a year old.  If she comes in contact with an unvaccinated child who is carrying a strain of any of those viruses, she's at risk, and could die

Can an unvaccinated child's parent be charged with murder if their illness leads to another child's death?

I think what Toledo is saying is that your baby will be exposed to billions of germs a day.  If their immune system were so weak that they couldn't handle the 4 or 10 different types in the CDC schedule, they would probably end up dead just from encountering germs in everyday life.
