Question for those that pump

How many oz did your newborn eat if you pumped and bottle fed your baby? I am EBFing but would like for DH to be able to give DS one bottle or so a day. I am not sure how many oz he should be taking at this point since he is still so young. He had his first bottle tonight and we gave him a little less than 2 oz. He ate it well and didn't spit up or anything but he was hungry less than 2 hours later so I am wondering if maybe he needed more. Just curious as to what others have done. For what it is worth, he weighs 6 lbs 6 oz.

Re: Question for those that pump

  • I didn't introduce a bottle until 4 weeks and at that point, he ate about 2.5 to 3 oz of BM in a bottle.

I would think a 5 day old baby wouldn't eat more than 1-1.5 ounces.

  • When my LO was approximately 2 1/2 weeks old I ended up in the hospital, I pumped and sent milk hold with DH and at that time hes was drinking about 2-3 oz every couple of hours. With both BF and EP though, their stomachs are so small they really can't take too much. HTH! (Oh and my LO was 7lbs 1oz and probably about that same weight around the 2 1/2 week mark, but every baby is different)

Now he's 10 weeks old and takes about 5-6oz every few hours and 7 when he wakes up Smile

  • I just pumped my first bottle for DS yesterday and he ate all 2oz and was hungry again half an hour later.  My DS is 3+wks old though, yours is very young and 2oz will probably be a good starting point.  Eating every 2hrs is normal at this age.

  • Our pediatrician told us 2-3 ounces every 2-3 hours and that was exactly what DS did. Last week he started finishing his 3 oz. bottles and at his 1 month appointment yesterday, she said he'll now be eating 3-4 oz. every 3-4 hours. Either way it basically works out to one ounce per hour. His weight was also the same as your DS.

  • When I left the hospital I was EPing, I was told to feed her 2.5 oz every 2 hours to get to 21 oz in 24 hours.  I think that would be the same for your little guy since he is under 8 pounds.

Pretty much this- at DS first pedi checkup at 4 days old  we asked because I was pumping as well as supplementing formula until my milk fully came in (thank god it did yesterday). The pedi told us 2-3 oz every 2-3 hours is normal for this age/size. DS was born at 6lbs 15oz and its currently 6lbs 5oz and holding steady and slowly gaining back at this point. I know when I pump now both sides for 15 minutes in between feedings I get about 3 ounces total so im guessing if he is eating 15 minutes each side he is getting about 3 ounces now that I am finally able to exclusive BF. We have already given him a bottles of breast milk so that DH can help with night time feedings and he has had no problems going between the medela brand bottles and the breast.

  • My baby weighs a little bit more than that, but for the past 2 weeks or so she's been eating 3-3.5 ounces.

  • I started pumping so DH could give her a bottle at 3 weeks, and she never took more than 2 oz. In fact, she's 12 weeks now and has just started taking 3-4 oz this week. At most she would take 2.5. She only gets BM and still eats every 2 hours during the day, then goes from 9:30pm - 5/6 am.

My unsolicited advice? It worked best for us when we tried to give the bottle at a different time every day so she didn't get used to it at one particular time. Also, don't give the bottle for the last feeding of the day, or you'll wake up in pain! :) Lastly, we try to avoid giving her the bottle during "barracuda hour" a.k.a. her fussy time (around 6 pm). HTH!
