I was told to avoid laying on my back starting the second trimester on. Is this true? sometimes it gets old trying to shift from side to side. Just curious what others have been told. Thanks!

I asked my doctor when I should start worrying about sleeping on my back during the night and she said 20 weeks. maybe check with yours at your next appointment, I'm sure they all vary.
Mine said that after 20 weeks I shouldn't be laying on my back for hours on purpose or anything but if that's what it took to fall asleep, relax or I wake up that way so be it. OB told me that I'd wake myself up or my body would tell me to move before it was ever a harmful issue.
I sleep on my back every night, I do rotate to my sides but I spend most of the night on my back. It's still very comfortable for me, no feelings of being lightheaded.
They mean totally flat on your back. I can't sleep on my side all night so I use two pillows to prop myself semi up. I also got the Boppy wedge so I can slide it under my back as well. I can't sleep on my stomach at all anymore (boo).

yes it is true. the weight of your uterus/baby puts pressure on the main blood vessels in your black and it can stop blood flow if you lie down on your back too long. you will probably feel dizzy/faint when it's been too long.
I remember being at the beach when I was pregnant with DD, and I went to lay down on my back to enjoy the sun, OMG it was impossible to lay flat on my back I was about 5 months. Right now, I lay however, your body will tell you to shift positions.

Thank you ladies for taking the time to give me your input. I guess it's one of those things where I need to pay attention to my body and know when it becomes uncomfortable. I ask because now my husband gets on me everytime he sees me laying on my back. This way I can show him that it won't become an issue until my belly is bigger. Thanks again!

Right now I still sleep on my stomach or back and havent had any issues yet. I figure my body would tell me if I needed to change positions. I know sometimes laying on the couch I can only lay so long on my side before it starts to hurt.
Re: bad to lay on your back???
This.
SOmetimes, my hips simply cannot take being slept on all night long. I use 2 pillows to prop up my head/upper body a little.

When I was pregnant with my ds there came a point I could no longer lay on my back--because I couldn't breathe.
Don't lay FLAT on your back...but if you find your self sleeping on your back in the middle of the night it's no big deal.
