Bumpers...WWYD?

FIL got DH all worked up about carbon dioxide pooling with bumpers.  To make DH happy I took off the long end on the outside.

C is swaddled at night.

The kiddo has started moving a lot at night. Like I'll wake up and you can't even see her on the monitor.  I've gone up and she has the back of her head on the rails.  A time or two she's been banging her head.  She's placed in the dead center width wise and pretty high up.  She's scooting all the way down to the bottom.

WWYD? put it back on?  I'm nervous then about her face possibly getting mashed up against it.  Take it off and let her keep banging her head?

Looking at the breathable bumpers I don't think they would work since they are so thin which wouldn't help her little head.

I did find something that's like a sock(for lack of better word) for each individual bar...I was thinking of asking Gigi(Grandma) to make for her...but they look like a lot of work. ok just found them again...

Re: Bumpers...WWYD?

  • We never had the bumpers on Natalie's crib. When she started moving around she would roll into the sides and bump her head, but it never woke her up or upset her. She would also stick her feet out the slats but never got stuck...I am sort of convinced she actually did it on purpose, lol.

So I'd try without the bumpers if you can. A head bump isn't going to harm her...if she's not upset about it, I say it's fine. I am not super paranoid about SIDS and stuff like that, but I figure if you can go without the bumpers, then why not?

  • This is the first time she ever slept unswaddled, enjoying her sweet freedom. lol.

  • I can't see pics at work =( I'll bookmark for home though!

I'm not super freaked out about SIDS either but the thought of her face mashed up against the bumper bothers me.

She wakes up when she's hungry, gets fussy and starts scooting around.  I think when she makes contact with the crib is when she gets fussier but I'm not sure if it hurts her.

  • We still have DS's bumpers on.  We took them off one night, and he would ram into them and wake up crying, so I put them back on the next night!

If your DH is concerned with CO2 pooling - just make sure you have a light fan going to circulate the air.  Those slat bumpers look ok, too, but i am not sure how padded they are, so might not be any more comfy than the breathable ones.

I would send DH to soothe DD everytime she wakes up from hitting her head - DH may have a different tune in the middle of the night!

  • We have a breathable bumper and there is a tiny bit of cushion to it.  I started using it to keep arms and legs in the crib.  DS sleeps with his head right against the rails also.  I think it's better than nothing.

She doesn't have a fan in her room...and there is really not a place to put one near her crib.  She only really does the scoot thing when she wakes up hungry so it's me that has to go get her anyways LOL

    gah! I'm so confused!

  • We have had the bumpers on since day 1.  Honestly if it wasn't for The Bump I would have never known they were a danger.  DS loves to sleep up in his bumpers.  By the age he started to do that he was already old enough to lift up his head though.

I plan on using them with DS #2 as well.  I believe in taking precautions but for some reason this just didn't scare me.

She has really strong neck muscles for her age so maybe I'm worrying about nothing...

Again she only moves when she's up and hungry.  I always hear her and go up right away.

Get a small portable fan. We use a breathable bumper and Olivia is always face up against it. I'm not really worried though because I'm pretty sure she moves her head a million billion times a night. I find her one way and an hour later another way. She wiggles ALOT to put herself back to sleep.

Sorry I didn't read the part where you said there was no place for one. Oops.

  • I'm pro bumper and we have always had a bumper on DD's crib. I'd leave the bumper on but then again, I never did freak about bumpers even with all the stuff on the Bump. DD sometimes smashes her face into her bumper but she's older so she moves around a lot.

If you can't do the fan, I don't have a solution but I'd still personally leave the bumper on. Maybe you can leave the door cracked so there is air circulation that way? Can you do a standing fan? Just keep checking on her if it makes you feel better (I used to wake several times a night and still do just from breastfeeding habits).

Ditto. There is a small amount of padding and DS will sleep with his head right next to it with no problems.

  • We have bumpers on, and also have a fan in his room.  I had DH install it for that reason - but 1/2 the time I forget to turn it on.

Now that DS isn't swaddled anymore he moves in his sleep so much.  I worry more about him hitting his head hard than suffocating against them.  I figure if he can do a 180 while being completely asleep, then he'll be able to lift his head and turn if he can't breathe.

I was actually rude to him when he brought it up but he got Dh so fired up. He gives his grandkid something that reeks of pot but bumpers are bad? She sleeps with her door wide open already :-)

Pot is from the earth. Duh.

You could also get one of those breathing monitors that clip to the diaper if that puts your DH at ease.

  • Both my kids started with bumpers.  We had to take them off for Luca because he was using them for extra leverage to climb out.  Lila still has hers.  I washed them and put them back on today.  She loves to sleep squished against them.  If I take them off, she gets her feet stuck in the crib slats...
  • I'm no help. My baby co-sleeps!

Our crib currently is storage for clothes that he can't fit anymore!
