TTC after 35

Need Opinion

I'm debating about calling the doctor to just get checked out or something.

Cliff notes:  I had a miscarrage (sp?) at the beginning of August last year.  We waited like we were supposed (2 months) and then started trying again.  We haven't had any luck yet.  My birthday is this summer and I'll be 37.

I've been taking the ovulation tests to help get the best days and all that jazz.  This month...I didn't see a positive day to ovulate.   I mean maybe I missed it.

So, I'm started to get nervous about not being able to get pregnant.

Would you ladies call the doctor to make sure all my stuff is working or what?

Re: Need Opinion

  • run ... don't walk.

seriously, i don't mean to be an alarmist, but time is not a luxury we have at our AMA.

  • Yes, I would see a doctor but go to a reproductive endocronologist. Don't see your OB.    I started TTC in August and have had no luck at all. Turns out my bloodwork shows elevated FSH/low AMH= low chance of me ever getting pregnant on my own.   I will be starting IUI in 2 weeks. You may be totally fine and your body may just be healing from the miscarriage. But it can't hurt to get day 3 bloodwork done, just in case.  You don't want to wait time IF there is something not correct. We can't get these months back.

As for the OPK's, are you testing 2 times a day? I have a short surge and I'd miss it if I was only testing one time a day.

  • I have to agree with the other ladies.  I would go to a specialist.  It doesn't hurt to atleast go meet with one and get an oppinon and get a blood work-up done.  Atleast if there is some type of issue there then you will know and it will make moving forward much easier.

  • I agree with the others.  Go see a specialist.  It really makes you feel better to know someone is helping you that really knows what they are doing!  Good luck!

  • I think you should ask your OB about clomid and IUIs.  It is a pretty easy route to go and it provided us with quick results.  We had been using a CBEFM for years and were only successful about every 1.5-2 years.  The clomid & IUI seemed to give my ovaries the kick in the ass they needed.  I conceived on the 2nd cycle and it was not all that expensive compared to other options. We had a MC, put I was certainly pleased with the way my body responded when we stepped up our efforts.

  • I agree with the other ladies.  Important to get to a RE.  Most insurance will at least pay for testing if over 35 and TTC for at least 6 months.  I wish I hadn't waited a year, had gone at 6 months.  I wanted to do it on our own, but now thinking that those 6 months could have been our window of opportunity-and I cann't get them back!

  • Thank you so much ladies.

So, to make sure I've got this right y'all suggest going to a specialist vs. my ob.  What kind of specialist?

  • A Reproductive Endocrinolgist. They are specialists in fertility/infertility. Most likely there is a fertility clinic in your area. Or your OB can refer you to one.

When we were first facing these decisions, I actually went through my OB. Now 5 months later we're about to have the first RE appointment, and I'm really hoping he doesn't require to retest everything I've already done. I think they won't since the offices are right next door, and they refer patients to each other all the time, but I guess I will find out this Friday.

The other thing I would recommend doing is to call your insurance to find out what they do/don't cover. Everyone's is different. Mine only covers diagnostic testing, but at least I had that covered! I know it's scary to first make the decision to make that appointment but they are experts in the field of understanding women's hormones, cycles, etc. and men's fertility issues as well.

    Best of luck!

  • Thanks y'all.  I'm getting scared since we haven't had any luck yet.  And it did take almost year to get pregnant the first time (then the miscarriage Crying)

I'll talk to the hubs tonight and start checking with the insurance tomorrow.

    I appreciate it!
