Parenting after 35

How many times do you and your SO go out on dates?

with each other, no kids to a movie/restaurant/etc....  DH and I have not been on a date since N was born.  Yeah, I know, not good...probably why we're at each other's throats now.  There's still a lot of friction in my house....but that's all for another post and another day.  So I was wondering how many times do you and your SO make time for each other/go out on a date.

Re: How many times do you and your SO go out on dates?

  • *snork*  Date, what is a date?  We do try to spend time together every night after Michael goes to bed.  So the answer would be no.  I am hoping to get something together for next month.  We are not big V-Day people but a date to celebrate would be nice.

  • Since Thomas has been born, hmmm...maybe 2 or 3 times.  We have season tickets to the symphony so those dates are set; so we'll do dinner before the symphony.  However, its been so cold lately, we've been giving the tickets away.

We snuck out two weeks ago after a parent meeting for Kindergarten for dinner with just the two of us.  Since we had a sitter anyway.  But other than this we probably get out 2x a yr & unless it is our anniversary we always go with other couples.

It's hard with little ones.  You have three little little ones at home, give yourself a break.  Things will get easier & it will be easier to get out.  I am not good with leaving my kids to anyone but my husband & my inlaws & mom are not good at helping.  So usually we go out with our friends separately.  Which is nice too.  Do you get out for girls night at all? Sometimes it is refreshing to just get out ; )

Also, sometimes we will eat dinner after the kids go to bed, have some wine, & listen to music.

  • Probably every couple of months, usually if we have tickets to a play or comedy act. My sister lives close by, so she's good about coming over to sit for us if we need a night out.

We went out a couple of weeks ago for the night. I really feel it's important to get the time away with my husband.

  • Hmmm.... Not as often as we should. We really don't have it in our budget to pay a sitter. So, it's when my MIL comes down or we go up there. D'd Godmother watched her once last year and will this Saturday so we can celebrate our anniversary. In total since D was born - 5 times.

  • We were actually good for a while going out once a month. But that was a year ago.  We mainly go now when my parents visit (every three months) or when friends takes pity on us and babysit.

  • We try for once a month.  My ILs will usually come up a couple times a month and we'll go out to dinner while they play with Rachel.  And our daycare has a parents night out that is $25 from 4-9 once a month.  We've taken advantage of that 2x and gone out for an early bird dinner and have picked up Rachel by 6:30pm.  yep were lame.

  • I think we've used a "sitter" twice since C was born.. Once last summer when I was dying to see the new Robin Hood movie.  Took him over to some friends so he could play with their little girls.   Second time was just a few weeks ago.. can't remember why, but the next-door neighbor and her 3 girls watched him for us for a few hours.

We do have a banquet in a few weeks, and concert tickets in March, so I forsee a few more babysitting days ahead.   So far, everyone just wants to watch him for us for NO PAY.. which is cool with me!

  • We continued our weekly datenight every Wednesday. We leave after Sarah is asleep at around 8 and the Au Pair is in the house guarding the baby monitor. That way, I don't miss time with her and we get to continue our adult activities. It works out great for us.

  • HAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!  That would be a "never."

Actually, I think we did go out once, back when we were in France, and left the baby with Rom's sister.  Margaux reportedly cried the whole time we were gone.  :(

  • Occassionally, after Robby goes to bed, Heather will be in charge and Mike and I will go to Costco by ourselves. Does that count?

We have such an exciting life. LOL

  • Not enough! We do once a month. We send Gracie to my parents overnight.

  • Date night? What's "date night"?... Seriously. We've been to a couple of movies (matinees, of course), out for brunch once and a work Christmas party. That's the extent of it. If we had family nearby we would probably do more. Our friends are always "busy" and we just don't feel comfortable leaving her with a sitter that we barely know.

  • Next to never. But our situation is a bit unique. My eldest has autism and requires special care and understanding. We could get "respite" care, but I'm just not comfortable leaving him with someone I don't know. Thankfully, he's built a nice relationship with both grandmas so I usually ask one of them to watch the boys. We're getting our first one in over 8months soon. I'm so excited.

But you have to get up at a really early time...I usually get up at 7:30, Sarah sleeps until 8 most days.

  • The last time we went out without M was for my birthday a few months ago. Not bad, considering how rarely some of you ladies get alone time with your DH's.
  • We haven't been on a date since Logan was born. Almost a year. It definitely is important for you and your DH to have some quality time together. DH and I have been doing better since we put Logan in his own room.

  • We manage it about 1-2 times per month, on average.

  • Until Caroline was 9 months old we didn't have any dates alone. Now that we have her night night routine set and she goes down easily, we have my SIL come over occasionally after C goes to sleep and DH and I go out. It is so nice to get out with DH alone and not worry that I am missing out on time with DD. We got out probably once or twice a month, never for a late night but an hour or two.

  • What's a date? OK I can't blame it on DH & DD but also the crappy weather. I am so looking forward to the spring & our weekly outings for breakfast. We enoy that at this stage of Seinna's. It's easier knowing she's in a good mood in the morning when she wakes. Dinner could be a potential disaster if she is tired...but we'll try it in the spring.

  • Funny you should ask that, we just went out tonight b/c of the ice storm, and last week b/c of the snow storm. Our day-time nanny's H is afraid to drive under those conditions (they have 1 car) so she stays with us overnight and lets us go out. We live near downtown with all the restaurants. Last week we got into a place where they absolutely won't take you w/o reservation. Tonight we went to a sushi place.

  • Add us to the "never" list.  DH and I have occasionally stayed up late having wine with the baby monitor next to us.  That's as good as it gets!

  • Three times since Sydney was born.

We are planning on getting out more this summer. Just the two of us AND also going out with friends. We have totally neglected our friends since Sydney! My Mom will watch Sydney whenever we want at night. We just never ask her.

  • At least every other week. I have every other Friday off work so we try to do lunch together on those days while the girls are in daycare. We'll also throw an occassional movie or dinner in every month or so. Plus, we spend most evenings together working out after the girls go to bed. Keeps us together.

  • Twice.

And now that we're living with my family, it will be a LONG time before we're able to.  I mean who is going to babysit with my parents and brother living in our house? My parents are unable to babysit and my brother is incapable (emotionally).

I made a decision to ask my BFF to watch Aaron occasionally (she'd probably do it) so we can go to dinner alone?perhaps for my birthday in April or our anniversary in June.  DH's 40th birthday is in May, but it's going to be a kid-friendly, family affair.

  • We have a sitter who comes once a week, so, once a week.

But this is fairly new.  We went huge, huge periods of time with no 'dates' just for us.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Three times in a year. Our anniversary, my birthday and last week for the anniversary of our first date.

Truthfully though, we have so much fun doing things with L that we could go out more alone, but like bringing him along....

  • I would say we get out either just the 2 of us or with friends about 2-3 times/month...while babysitters are expensive, we suck it up and pay it....its important to us that we still do that.  I need that time to re-connect with DH...

  • What date? Sadly, the last time we left A with a babysitter at home and went out to dinner/movie, was for my birthday... last July! I'm dying to go out again though, so I might try to arrange something for Valentine's. Probably not for that weekend but the weekend before, we hate to battle crowds and overpay.
