$300 to talk?

Is that right?  My new doc charging $300 just for a consult, no exam or tests?

Also, tell me what you think - We're in a smallish-city.  No REs for 2 hours drive time.  My appointment is with a very highly rated D.O. in the area, who is the fertility specialist at the best practice in town.  They have on-site ultasound and lab, and do perform IUIs and IVF, even though they are not solely a "fertility" clinic.  Would this make you nervous?  Would you skip this guy and deal with a 2 hour drive?  Or would you put faith in all the recommendations for this guy?  I'm getting nervous.  TIA.

Yeesh, I don't know what I'd do in your shoes.

I'm super lucky in that 2 of the best clinics in the country are within 30 minutes of my house (I'm at least told they are 2 of the best clinics, and I do know that people come to both from around the country).

My RE (from one of those clinics) charged about $160 for a consult visit (for DS) and the same for a regroup (in November).  None of that is covered by my insurance, but it is the having-insurance rate.

Personally, if I'm going to spend the money, I'd want to go to a real RE, but that's because I can while staying on my normal schedule. I don't know what a 2 hour drive each way would do to that.

Just my 2 cents, but I wouldn't do it.  I would pay it to talk to an RE, but not an OBGYN specializing in infertility b/c there is a huge difference.  I know that REs are a long way from your house, but maybe you can call a few and see if they have any suggestions for monitoring in your area and how theyt would handle your case with keeping the distance in mind.  Many of the larger centers are used to having patients traveling from a distance so they do their best to acommodate by coordinating monitoring with somewhere coser to home in a hospital, lab, etc.  Good luck!

That's about what our RE charged for the initial consult.  It was billed to the insurance.  The initial consult was to go over history, options and how to proceed with testing.

I am in the same situation as you.  I opted to do testing and Clomid monitoring with timed intercourse with my OB/gyn who specializes in PCOS and chose to make the long drive to a RE to discuss my options after the Clomid did not work.  My insurance does not cover infertility treatments, but my initial consultation was covered.  I had to get a referral from my family doctor instead of my ob/gyn to get it covered for some reason.

I went to an RE and they charged $165 for the initial consult, but that is bloodwork, my plan in place, and to go over my records!  That just seems like a lot to just talk to them!

My RE charges $300 for the initial consult.  He also spent over an hour talking to us, going over our history, and did an U/S.
