Toddler hates having his hair washed - tips?

DS used to not mind getting his hair washed, but now it's a huge battle.  We have one of those pitchers that help keep the water out of his eyes, and use totally tear free stuff, but he gets really upset - even when just water gets near his face.  Any tips or tricks I should try?

    Maybe some of that colored soap my work well. They come in colors like pink, blue, etc. Then have him pump it in his hands and apply it himself? Does he take a shower with you? That might help to get him over the water near his head thing. GL!

    What about having him do it himself? I learned this trick from my mom. Get them a play watering can from the toy store and have them pour water over their own head. My kids are bent on doing everything themselves so if they get the chance to do something without mom's help, they are all over it.

    We had that battle for the longest time. What helped:

    - taking swim lessons for 2 sessions last summer

    - asking him when he was ready, then he says '1, 2, 3...'

    - he puts a washcloth over his face

     But it took a long time. I think the swim lessons helped the most. I still ask him, "are you ready?" and he will say "ready set go"

    We had this probelm with our DD forever.  She just now doesn't mind getting her hair washed.  In fact, she asks to wash her hair now.  But for awhile, all I could do was do it fast...all while she screamed through it.  I would have her put a washcloth on her face.  That would help sometimes.

    Ooh, I like these ideas!  Miles hates to have water dumped over his head too.  The only thing I can add is to skip the pre-soap rinse.  I used to wet his head, soap, then rinse, which led to two rounds of screaming.  But you don't need much water for washing, so you can skip the pre-soap rinse. 

     Colored soap!  Cool!
