Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Never ending ear infection...

It has been over three weeks since DS started showing signs of his ear infection. Since it started on a Sunday and we had a blizzard that Monday he did not get in until Tuesday. Two round of antibiotics since then and Hendrix is still pulling at his ear and acting like it hurts. He has on more day of round two but since it has been 9 days or so since he started them it does not seem like they are going to work.

Had anyone else been through this? What does the doctor do next? Nurse practitioner SIL says we should ask the pedi to see an ENT. Have you taken your LO to an ENT?

Re: Never ending ear infection...

  • We are on ear infection # 4 in almost 9 months.  With the last one, they mentioned an ENT consult but I have his 9 month appt next week so I won't know until then if we need that consult or not.  This past weekend, I took him back in b/c he was still pulling at his ears after being on Omnicef for 6 days but they said his ears looked good.  I wondered if his ears were itchy.  I know when I've been sick in the past, sometimes the inside of my ears itch.

  • I have actually dealt with quite a few never ending ear infections.  I would definitley take him back in.  The antibiotics are not working. If they haven't started by now they won't. It is so frustrating.  I did take my son to an ENT. He ended up with tubes. The infection just wouldn't clear up.

Now my other son ended up getting a series of antibiotic shots his was so bad, then they put tubes in. I don't know if they will go ahead put tubes in your sons ears, but he definitely needs another form of antibiotics Hoepfully it clears up soon. Those ear infections are bad.

I am almost hoping they do tubes. DH had horrible ears and was legally deaf from the time he was 1 ish to 6 or so because his ears were so bad. Poor kiddo. :(

  • Going through this right now.  DD #2 was first dignosed with an ear infection on Jan 1st.  She has been on 3 types of antibiotics:  Amoxicillan, Omnicef and Augmentin.  None of them have worked.  We've had to take her every week after giving the medicine a few days to kick in and then realizing she is still miserable.

Yesterday, she had her first shot of Rocephin.  Today she'll get her second shot and she'll go back in on Wednesday to see if she needs a third shot.

I'm definitely making an appointment with ENT.  She is 9 months old, this is at least her third ear infection.  I also read after getting the Rocephin shot, you can expect another ear infection and it will be worse than the one treated with the shot.
