Re: Poll: TV for LO

  • She doesn't get any right now. Unless she watches when I have HGTV on like once every week. Apparently SO (SAHD) will put in Milo and Otis to entertain her sometimes...

We haven't come up with a complete plan for TV, but we do plan on limiting it and the type of shows too. Whatever the new version of Hannah Montana is when she is five, will not be in our home.

  • The TV is on but DD rarely pays attention to it. She does LOVE Sesame Street and she watches it during pre-nap bottle.

  • I put on the Disney Channel when I get ready in the morning - it is always Special Agent Oso or Timmy Time.  Kylie always starts smiling and cooing when the song parts come on so I take it that she likes it.

  • With dd1 we didn't watch anything for her benefit until she was about a year old.. with dd2 she get's to watch sisters cartoons.. Mickey Mouse Club House etc... but really she could careless about what's on the screen. She did seem to like Glee when she had a couple late nights lol.

  • We don't let DS watch TV since there's no need at this age.  Sometimes if it's on and we're watching it, he'll get in a zone but it's only for a minute or two before we distract him.  He seems to really love sports though... such a boy!

  • If I turn the TV on he's super into it for about 10 seconds.  Other than that he's not into TV so it's a non-issue for me at this point.  I don't see myself ever having a strict limit on TV, but I don't plan on just letting him be a couch potato either.

  • No  TV yet here.  I don't know when we'll start putting it on for her.

  • The only time we have to the TV on when she's awake is for the news and football games. We try to redirect her if she focuses in on it.

I ONCE let her watch Yo Gaba Gaba. We had a really rough night and I was sick. I needed a few minutes to myself. It scared me out intensly she watched it. And that show is creepy.

  • We don't watch a lot of TV, but Mia seems to love I Dream of Jeannie and Bewitched - those shows buy me 25 peaceful minutes to shower, dry my hair ... and the plots are much cleaner than new TV I find.  As for kids shows - she couldn't care less, then again I don't really put them on very often.
  • I generally have tv on when I'm home- sometimes just on the music channel.  I do, however, have the previous day's Sesame Street DVR'd and playing for DS while I'm getting ready in the morning.  Sometimes he's watching it (usually when Elmo or Abby are on) and sometimes he playing independently.  When I get home from work, I put on Dinosaur Train which is on right before Sesame every day and is a reeeeally cute show- I've learned so much about dinosaurs ;-) and just like with Sas'me (as we refer to it) he's sometimes watching and sometimes not.

I'm not expecting him to learn anything from watching tv and I realize he's just looking at colors/characters.  I'm not worried in the least regarding his tv watching.  Just like Dreamsicle, I don't see myself being uber strict about it but I will absolutely be encouraging play (especially outdoor play as so many kids no longer parttake in anymore) as he grows.

Totally agree about Yo Gabba Gabba. Cree-py! Will never let DS watch it.

I let DS watch TV, but the only shows he shows remote interest in are Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, sometimes Sesame Street and Curious George, and he does like that Chuggington show (he LOVES trains.)

  • We will not let DD watch TV until she's at least three.  It's very rarely on while she's awake.  Sometimes I'll nurse her and hold her on the couch while she takes a nap and I'll watch something, but as a general rule, it's off-limits.

It totally creeps me out how zoned out she gets when she looks at the TV.  It's like her little happy baby brain shuts down and she turns into a zombie.  She doesn't need it and can't get anything out of it at the age.

If I need to put her down and have her entertain herself, I give her blocks or stacking cups and I talk and sing to her.  That's all she needs at seven months old.

  • None right now and he doesn't seem too interested in it.  I'm going to stay away from Dora and Diego simply because they annoy me.  Add Barney and Doodlebops to that list.  But of course, if he seems to like one of the above and it lets me get 10 minutes of housework done, then I'm all over it.
  • Our TV is on all day because I need some sort of background noise.  DD will sometimes glance at it, but she usually just plays with her toys.
  • I put the disney shows on in the morning while DS plays in his exercauser. He will watch for a minute or two, play, watch again. I like to put Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Chuggington on for him.

Oh, and SOMETIMES at night I will put our baby einstein lullaby dvd on for him.

  • DS watches a little bit of TV in the morning while he is having his bottle before we leave for daycare.  The Disney channel only, so depending on the day/time it would be one of the following shows:  Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Special Agent Oso or Handy Manny.  At most maybe 1/2 an hour of TV per day.

  • No tv. Maybe when she's two, and then we'll try to limit it.  DH and I are such addicts, I hope to give DD a better start.
  • We always seem to have the tv on just in the background, and I watch things like the early show and whatnot. Lo is usually with me on the couch it on her mat where I guess she could see the tv - but she doesn't seem to interested in it (even when I put on some baby Einstein stuff from netflicks). But as to what's being played I don't care. We have things like Dexter, the news, etc... I tend not to worry about things like that.
  • We don't usually let her watch TV at all.  We'll put on a baby Einstein dvd if I need to clip her nails. But we've all been sick the past few days so she'll watch whatever we watch (usually Food Network) but mostly she'll be playing on the mat with her toys

  • I've tried to see if she will watch cartoons and she is not interested. Though, she LOVES Wheel of Fortune!! Which is perfect for me cause I can get dinner going while she is watching!!

  • I have a 3 year old.  There is a blizzard outside.  LO will most likely be seeing some cartoons today.  I'm not too concerned.  The TV is on a lot and it's always children's programing.  I NEVER watch anything I want to ;-)

  • The only time she really looks at the tv is when music comes on.    I do turn the channel if there is something on that I wouldn't want in her brain. For example, the other day I was watching a documentary about Sadaam Hussein and at the end they started to show him being brought up to be hung. I looked over and saw DD in her bouncer looking at the TV, so I quickly changed the channel.

May sound stupid to some, but our brains are capable of holding billions of images and memories. I don't want a man being killed to be in any part of her brain floating around if I can help it.

  • DS doesn't really "watch" TV. Sometime he is on my lap when I am watching TV, but I don't sit him down in front of the TV and put a specific show on. He seems fascinated when we are watching shows with babies, but I doubt he really knows what he is looking at/hearing.

  • Elise watches maybe 20-30 minutes of the news with me when we get up in the morning during her first bottle of the day and while I eat breakfast. Even then she doesn't so much "watch" it as glance at it now and then.

Once I eat breakfast, the TV gets turned off and we don't turn it on again until after she goes to bed. I definitely plan on limiting her TV watching and what programs she watches.
