Help - bad diaper rash!

Delaney had been on meds for 3 weeks now for ear infection. She had a yeast infection, which has cleared up, but her tushie is so very red. It's raw and every poopie clean up is heartbreaking from her cries of pain. I know the drill - make sure she is completely dry, change often, nakey time. We are using Triple Paste as per the pedi. Anything else that can help soothe her? Another cream, a special bath? This is breaking my heart.

  • Poor, poor baby!! The only thing we ever use is Desitin and it always seems to work pretty quickly.

What about baby powder with corn starch?

  • When Priya had her own poopgate last month, we started using corn starch.  Just plain, simple, out of the cupboard corn starch.  No diaper cream, just cleaned her off and sprinkled some on.  Worked like MAGIC!!  It's my new go-to for diaper redness.

  • When Aaron had the awful rash, my ped prescribed a Rx cream (Nystatin) and after a week or so, it cleared up. But it took a while.

  • My LO has had only one bad diaper rash. Two prescriptions did not clear it up. California Baby Diaper Cream, which has an anti-fungal in it. Now, when LO get a bit pink, I put California Baby Diaper Cream on it and it clears it right up. Plus, you can get it at Target! I hope your LO is feeling better!

  • I use Butt Paste and bathe him in Burt's Bees Milk Bath when his butt is really sore.
  • Love the Triple Paste.  my neighbor took her DD in for a really bad diaper rash (think raw meat) and they mixed some up for her there at the ER with equal parts corn starch, zinc oxide and maalox (something to wick away moisture, protective sealant and antiacid as that kind of poop is acidic).  You can also try a baking soda bath to soothe her bum, just don't let that get in her eyes, and as much diaper free time as possible.

  • I also love Triple Paste.  It cleared up my son's diaper rash and we haven't had any redness since we started using it.  Before I used that, I would give my son a lot of diaper free time and give him baking soda baths.  Those two things helped a lot.

They are more comforting. I think it would be good if you checked with a doctor for a soothing cream. It heals fast and works well.
  • I've always used GrandmaEl's, it will get rid of N's rash in less than 24hrs.  They are supposed to sell it at Target and a few of the baby stores, but I never find it and just end up ordering it online at either diapers.com or grandmaels.com

    Hope she feels better soon.....

  • We just went through this.   I would set Rachel in the sink and would spray her tush with water and would only use a wash cloth and water to clean her. Give her some time time to air dry. Just be extra gentle and dab more than wipe.

We used bag balm it is easy to clean off and provides a great barrier. A baking soda bath like a pp mentioned too.  Her tush was almost like new in 3 days. Keep us posted.

I used to sit my friend's son sometimes and he would have bad rashes from his antibiotics for his ear infections. His parents wouldn't clean him well because he screamed (esp. his dad). I would also put him in the tub to clean him off and that really helped.

For M, if she is ever even the tiniest bit pink, we use Weleda Diaper Cream on her. It cleared up the redness faster than anything else we tried and she has really, really sensative skin. It is cloth diaper safe.
