Thanks, Doc, that is exactly what I wanted to hear ;)

I had my 39 week appointment yesterday. My doctor walks in and proceeds to measure my belly. Instead of just measuring my belly, she feels around it, and says "Wow, big baby! How much did you guys weigh at birth?" My DH didn't know, but I was 9 lbs. Doc proceeds to say "I think you have at least that if not more in there." Surprise... but wait it gets better! I get my internal done (which, I was only a fingertip dilated), and my doc looks up and says "Wow! Nice sized head, too!" Indifferent. Man that's exactly what I wanted to hear a week before my due date. My vag hurts just thinking about it! That's ok, she is still moving around and her heart is beating which is most important.

Now I have to schedule a growth ultrasound so we can get a better sense of what we are dealing with here. I think depending on what the ultrasound says, they may go straight to c-section, which I am ok with, if they think it is best.

  • Don't let the doc scare you. (much more easily said than done!) Your body was built to birth this baby. You'll do great no matter what size the baby is. Good luck!

  • Try not to worry. With all my kids the weight the dr thought they would be was way bigger than they came out. I don't think they are that good at guessing. With Sean they said he was well over 9 pounds and he was only 7. Like the previous poster said your body made this baby your body can birth her.

  • I rotate doctors at my practice and only one of them always does this to me. She'll talk about how much I'm measuring ahead and how big the baby is. Freaks me out! The others are always like, nope, normal baby. So after my growth u/s they said he was in the 64th percentile and that was fine. Fine for you, you're a man, I'm the one pushing him out of my vag. But, then I read a ton of women who said their growth u/s were off and baby was smaller. So I'm crossing fingers and toes for that because I hear you, my ladyparts hurt just thinking about it. Do what's best for you, but know these things aren't the most accurate and he might be able to come out naturally and beautifully. But I completely understand that you're scared, especially if DH was a big baby. Mine and all his siblings were, and that scares me!

  • I agree--try not to worry--your body should be able to handle it (thinking of teeny tiny Vic Secret model Miranda Kerr who just birthed her son naturally and he was just a few ounces under 10 lbs).

Your OB could be wrong too!  But totally understand the fear/anxiety/frustration. :)

Exactly.  Cephalopelvic disproportion (CPD- when the baby actually won't fit) is really not common at all.  The pelvis is not a set size and neither is anything else in the nether regions, it all opens during birth! Don't let him scare you!!

For inspiration, DH's dad was a 13lb baby.  His mother is/was petite, about 5'4, 115lbs, and gave birth to him naturally.  Our bodies can do a lot :)

  • Thanks ladies :) I'm actually okay with it. Believe it or not, I am not too nervous. It was just funny the way she just up and came out with it. I also wouldn't be surprised if she is that big. I am absolutely huge, and she is very heavy. Anyway, I am usually one to leave the medical decisions up to the professionals... Vaginally or c-section, it really doesn't matter to me, whatever the docs this is best, as long as at the end of the day, she is out and safe.
