Day Care costs - Novi area?

I have a question regarding day care costs. I'm due in June and have no idea what to start budgeting for day care when I go back to work. We'll obviously start looking around soon, but I would really like to begin the process knowing what sort of costs are available in the area.

We live in the Novi/Commerce area and would like to  have our daycare close to home. We're open to a referred in-home provider or a center like Child Time or Kindercare - we have no idea what to expect so will most likely tour several places.

Would anyone mind sharing what they spend per week and if it is a center or in-home? Also - how did you find an in-home provider if that is what you are using?

Any and all help would be appreciated! Thanks so much!

Re: Day Care costs - Novi area?

  • When we looked at centers near that area for an infant they were around $225/week but went all the way up to $250/week.  Because my husband's company moved, we decided to pick a daycare on my way in to work, so we are at an in home center in Livonia and pay $185/week.  I found her based on a rec from a friend.

  • I'm not in Novi, but I am in the Birmingham area so I have a feeling that the "location premium" I will be paying may be comparable to what you might see in Novi.

DS will start at an in-home day-care Monday - mixed emotions Big SmileSad. We will pay $215 a week until he turns 18 months (he is just shy of 1) and then it will go down to $195 per week.  This cost will include breakfast, lunch, and a pm snack which I think is huge for us working moms.  The center we were considering would have been $246 a week and only included an am and pm snack, we still had to provide lunch from home.

This may sound a little scary, but I found my in-home provider online.  I interviewed  her once over the phone and twice at her home.  I also spoke with current and former parents.  To be honest, getting any kind of referral for daycare is difficult because most people will refer you to a place close to their home or their jobs which may not work for you logistically.  I thought that an in-home day care gave you much more bang for the buck, at least the ones that were in the running for our son.  I think it also helps that my provider is a trained teacher and not just someone who loves kids and wanted to start a daycare, so the environment she provides is much more structured that what I hear about some other daycares.  Her entire 1st floor is dedicated to the children and is set up in a "classroom" type setting.  I also liked our choice because there are quite a few children that are my son's age, just turned 1 or will be 1 this year.

Good luck, finding daycare is difficult, it's good you are starting early!

  • Peyton will only be going to day care part time- 2 full days per week. It's called JTots and it is in Farmington Hills.  We are going to be paying $66.25 per day... ugh.  But it is basically a little school.  They have a very strict curriculum which is nice.  The cost includes all diapers and wipes which is helpful.  Once she is older and eating real food, cost will also include breakfast, lunch, and a snack.  I think it's pricey but honestly, compared to other places we toured, I think it's worth it.

My advice is to make a bunch of phone calls and go physically see places.  There were some we thought looked great online but once we actually some them, they were not very great.  Also, don't be afraid to ask questions.  We asked JTots why we should choose them over other places that are less expensive.  The owner gave us a great answer that made sense.. AND gave us 2 weeks free plus gave us a 50% discount on the registration fee.

  • Thank you for all the reponses! I knew it was going to be expensive, but looking at the actual costs is kind of scary! DH just keeps reminding me that we're in a better financial position than a lot of people and we'll be fine, but I'm still stressing out!

It sounds like we should start the process of looking/narrowing down our choices. Oh, how I wish we had family in the area that could watch the little guy!

  • We use Livonia Little Tots - its $57 a day (he goes just a few days a week) and it is $270 a week.  The centers are pricey!
