membranes stripped

So at my 38 week appointment I am still 1cm and I have been for about 3 weeks. He is still talking induction due to high blood pressure and swelling, but wants me to progress a little bit more before we induce. I mentioned stripping the membranes to get things moving and he said he has the last 3 visits....really? Would have been nice if you had told me! So apparently that is not working and little one is quite content. If I progress by Thursday then we will induce on Friday. The waiting game continues as does bed rest.

Re: membranes stripped

  • My doc talked to me about stripping membranes at 38 weeks to get things moving (next week.)  Although when I mentioned that  heard its painful, he agreed that is not pleasant.  Good for you if you didn't feel it.  I'm somewhat scared.  Weird that he's done it 3 times with no progress.  That makes me want to rethink doing it.  Part thinks I'm be going through enough pain soon enough!!

  • That's how I felt when I had to call last week and my MW brought up that she'd stripped my membranes last Weds! I was like, Orly? LOL I had no idea. I wish I knew if it did anything though.

I hope things get moving for you. I'm about to put on my Suzanne Summers workout VHS and do some lunges, wanna join?

  • That is disheartening to hear. Which is probably why he didn't mention it to you so you wouldn't stress.

Although, my OB said that if you do an aggressive membrane sweep it is quite a bit more uncomfortable so you would be able to tell and you tend to bleed. Maybe he never did anything too major if you didn't even notice?

  • The first wasn't painful but I bleed a lot. He said he had stretched my cervix but I didn't think it was the same as stripping my membranes. Second. Time I thought it was just a regular internal no bleeding. This time I've had some pressure and spotting. Tiffany I may be joining you with those lunges!

  • Lmcarver I think it is different for everyone. Its definitely not comfortable but it didn't hurt any of the times he has done it.

  • My OB stripped my membranes today without warning me.  I thought it was a little early and wish she would have warned me before she did it!  It wasn't pleasant and I definitely bled.  She kept talking about this baby coming any day now.  I'm only 1cm and I'm still hoping he hangs out in there for another 3 weeks.  Shouldn't they let us know what they're doing?

I mentioned stripping membranes to DH and he didn't know what it was so he googled it. One of the pages that explained what it was said "this is something we do to speed labor blah blah blah... WITH OR WITHOUT the patients consent." He freaked out, asked me about it and I said, I don't think that really happens, but clearly it does! Eeep!
