Anyone dealing with Diastasis Recti??

Hey ladies,

I'm new and curious if anyone else is dealing with Diastasis recti ( spliting of abs). I've had my second child in the past 5 months and have been having a hard time with diastasis recti. From what I've gathered it's something that never fully goes away. I've checked out the book " How to Loose your mummy tummy" and have just gotten serious about the excercise recommended in it-turbular excercise. Just wondering what you have done to help repair it without surgery ( not an option) and to see if there's anything you can suggest to help the bulge go away. I'm a super small framed woman and am currentlt running half marathons-so excercise is already in progress. This D.R is making me depressed and I am looking for support and guidance. Thanks girls:)

Re: Anyone dealing with Diastasis Recti??

  • Yup, I have it. My practitioner was watching me for the first few months pp to see if it closes on it's own. Unfortunately, I made no progress. She said that it can only be surgically repaired. The good thing is it won't be considered a cosmetic procedure if the surgeon codes it as a risk for hernia. I'm also petite, 5'3" 107 lbs pre pregnancy - and had a gigantor of a baby 9lbs 12oz. The thing that sucks is that with exercise, the abdominal muscles tend to bulge even more. I even took it easy the first few months and wore an abdominal binder to no avail.

Unfortunately, I have no suggestions that aren't invasive for you. I am going to see a plastic surgeon next month. We are done having kids, so I'm looking to have the diastasis repaired and possibly getting a tuck.

Good luck, and PLEASE let me know if you find any other alternatives!

  • I am due in a couple of weeks, and I have very severe diastasis. My separation is a handwidth wide. I am a tall, slender woman, but my doctor has told me that my diastasis is "as bad as a very overweight woman who is expecting her third child." I have surgically corrected scoliosis, too, and I wonder whether it is related to that. The Tupler "Lose Your Mummy Tummy" and "Maternal Fitness" programs have made me feel better. But we won't know how bad it is until the baby comes, and I'm healed. I would love to hear more about the experiences of the other women posting here -- Yules, would love to hear about your consult with the plastic surgeon. My doctor indicated that mine would probably require surgery at some point. I am crossing my fingers that I can help it with exercise.
