Peanut butter

When did/will you introduce peanutbutter to your LO? I'm thinking of introducing peanut butter and jelly but am a bit nervous about the peanut allergy.

Re: Peanut butter

  • I think, like popcorn, that PB is off limits until age 3 or 4. Google it to make sure.

  • Hmmm.....I thought it was a year. I've given her PB sandwiches since she turned one. In fact, she had one for lunch today.

  • My daughter has been eating peanut butter since she was about 13 mos. old.  Our pediatrician said not to serve it until the 1 year mark and then to just spread it thinly so that it was not a choking hazard at that age.  Katie LOVES pb&j sandwiches.  I've offered her pb on sliced apple a few times, but she just picks the pb off and eats it by itself.

  • We started peanut butter at around a year. I wasn't worried about allergies, because she had an allergy test for something else and was negative for a peanut allergy. I spread it thin and she does really well with it.

  • We've given Margaux PB&J since she was about 13 months, the doctor said to go ahead.

  • We've been giving her pb&j's for a month or so. Ditto the PP - spread thinly so it's not a choking hazard.
  • Our pedi is really conservative about that and told us to wait until 2, so we're avoiding all tree nuts in general.

And what's wrong with popcorn???  Charlie loves it!  Of course, I take the hulls off for him first.

  • My pedi is SUPER conservative and said no peanut butter until at least age 3!  But I'll probably give it to him earlier (2).

As for the no popcorn, my pedi said no because it's a choking hazard mostly.

  • S has been eating pb since he was a year old, or even earlier...eats it every day, no problems!  I ate it all through my pregnancy and during breastfeeding so he's been exposed to it second hand for almost 2 years, not sure if that helped.

  • I have been trying to wait until 18 months.  But at this point if he get's a hold of something I am not too worried - he has had a few honey nut cheerios.  Popcorn & raisins (choking hazard) I am very old school about & those we will wait until he is over 2.

We're waiting until age 3.  We've talked about serving shrimp & PBJ sandwiches at his party, since he'll be able to eat them  then.  DS' cousin has a peanut allergy, so I am a little leary.

But he's been having raisins and popcorn since 18 months, and loves them!

  • I did around 20 months, even though I wanted to wait until after 2 (he had stolen some peanuts once and didn't react, so I thought it was safe).  He reacted with hives and turns out to be allergic.

Doc says to way a very long time.  I kick myself for not waiting longer.

  • I was super paranoid about peanuts...there is a family peanut allergy in the so DD just started eating peanut butter recently - maybe about 2 months ago...so she was 3 1/2. So far so good with her...I will probably try to wait till at least 2 with DS as well. It helps that school is peanut-free environment so I didn't have to worry about her getting snacks or anything there that had peanuts. Made it a lot easier to wait longer.

  • Our pedi told us to wait until 3.  Keep in mind, neither DH or I have any allergies, and I am a peanut butter fanatic.  I literally have been eating the stuff every day since I was 5.  Anyway, right before DD turned three, we decided to make her a PB &J sandwich on a warm toasted English muffin.  We started taping her on video, and said to DD, "Are you ready for a life changing experience? You are about to eat the most delicious stuff on the face of the earth"  Anyway, seconds later, DD started blowing up, her eye swelled shut, she had bumps all over her face and her lips blew up.  She started to cry and scratch her throat.  We panicked.  Called pedi first who said to give her Benadryl.  Had none in the house.  She started getting worse. Her voice changed.  We called 911, and she was taken via ambulance to the hospital.  Long story short, our little princess has a severe peanut allergy and needs to carry an EpiPen the rest of her life.  I don't want to scare you, but I would wait.  We are not going to try PB with DS until he is at least 5.
  • Reading this late (due to potential peanut allergy in my LO)... but wanted to note that the biggest link to increased peanut allergy in the U.S. is delayed introduction.  I actually think that unless there is a strong family history of allergy (like the PP), the worst thing you can do is delay unnecessarily.

We started our son on PB at 11 months and he loved it.  Recently he developed some contact sensitivity to it, so we will have him tested.  Still, I will also introduce early to the next child.  Food allergies are weird - but waiting doesn't make them go away and can sometimes make them worse.
