Comparing Portland-area hospital maternity wards

Thought I'd share this link I was thrilled to find.  There's a handy comparison chart, and I think most of the links to the hospital sites include short video tours.

I toured Providence St. Vincent's this past weekend, and was a bit disappointed...  So my search resumes.

  • Wow, that is a great chart!  Thanks for sharing!

  • We also toured St. V's and were not too pleased, our MW only delivers there and Meridian Park and we were super pleased with the tour of Meridian park...

  • Whoa! SUPER cool site! Thanks for the link.

Too bad they don't have a spot for daddy/partner accomodations (ie, sofa bed, day bed, chair...)

I looked at OHSU's info to see how accurate it was (since I delivered there 19 months ago). The "tour" video was kind of odd, since it hardly showed the rooms (which are nice). The only thing that I thought was off was the meals. When we were there, you could order food from a menu anytime... but it was only delievered at specific meal times. LOL. So true, but misleading. (There 24/7 cafeteria mentioned is accurate). That's a pretty minor point, so I'd say the info must be mostly accurate.

  • With #2 we were at OHSU and it was a great experience despite DD being in the NICU for two weeks! The nurses were really great and the lactation department was AWESOME! I had no engorgement issues when my milk came in because they started me pumping right away -- SUCH A BIG DIFFERENCE FROM #1!! The food was good and it was nice to receive the menu every morning. They also had an "extras" menu where you could order anything from that to add to your meals. My husband wasn't too terribly uncomfortable on the "bed" and the room was big and private. They send you home with tons of freebies. My only complaint is that they never sent off DD's info for SS# and we had to go through the process again when she was about 3mos old.

  • I delivered my little guy at Good Sam in July and had an amazing experience...Planned on a natural birth - but had to have a c-section after 30 hours...Staff was amazing, accomodations were great, and location was convenient for husband and family - as there are tons of restraunts and coffee shops near by.  I'd highly recommend taking a visit!
  • We just toured Kaiser Sunnyside last weekend.  The chart in the link doesn't mention it, but they also have the portable fetal monitoring system (like St. V) so you can walk or even go in the tub with it around your neck.  We were very impressed with the facility.  I was thrilled that the baby stays with you at all time and I was happy to hear they have the lowest c-section rate in the city, as well as 24-hour midwife care.  I'm very pleased with our decision to deliver there.

  • Just to update:  OHSU has a new meal service.  You can order anytime (starting at 6:30 am - not sure how late it goes) your food is brought up within about 45min.  You just call from your bedside phone & let them know what you want.
