Success after IF

How are saline sonohysterogram and HSG different?

I got a surprise call today that my fertility clinic can do my saline sonohysterogram for the upcoming IVF today. (eek!)

They said no ibuprofin was necessary. Is this that much different from a regular HSG that I truly don't need it. The last HSG I had done was insanely painful for me.  (this coming from a lady who has done 2 med free deliveries.  lol I'm a wuss!)

Re: How are saline sonohysterogram and HSG different?

  • Well, # 1, there is no dye used with the SHG and I think it doesn't spill into your tubes - just your uterus?  I didn't have one, but like you my HSG was excruciating.

Childhood cancer (DH) + chemo + radiation = 0 sperm.
    LO #1 - 1 unmedicated/self-monitored IUI w/ donor sperm.
    LO #2 - 1 m/c, 2 BFNs, 4th IUI worked (unmedicated/self-monitored with new donor sperm).
    Life is beautiful!

  • THey are very different.   I'm pretty sure anyone who does IVF needs to have a saline. They are looking at your uterus for fibroids, polyps, etc. There is no dye like in an HSG.where they are looking to see if your tubes are open.

For the record, my HSG was abosolutely horrendous and my Saline was a piece of cake.

  • Saline is cake!  Don't worry!  I barely felt it last time (granted, I never had a HSG, but I've had other painful things done)

  • I had a saline before my first IVF, and it was pretty painful... I think a lot of it depends on when in your cycle it happens and how open/amenable your cervix is. I am going to have another one for kid #2 in a few weeks, and I plan on taking at least 600mg of ibuprofen beforehand. But hopefully yours will be easy! Good luck!

  • Not painful at all! A teeny little cramp as they thread the catheter and push the saline, but no pain. Good luck!!

  • The HSG was the most painful experience I've ever had. And that's after having an unmedicated labor w/ G. The salines were uncomfortable, but nowhere close to the pain of the HSG. I also had lingering pain/discomfort after the HSG, but was perfectly fine after the salines.

    You'll be OK.

Ditto your HSG experience, A, and ditto Lisa!  I think it helped that I'd had a delivery in the meantime too.  Plus, the SHG is just a u/s with a bonus, plus injecting saline was much easier than dye, IME!

  • My SHG was hellish. it was very very painful.

and I am not a wimp, I made it through a surprise med free csection, so I think I can tolerate a lot!

I hope your goes smoothly, Angie! I would take a couple tylenol first!
