EBF and Alcohol question

I do plan to consult with a LC about this.  But in the mean time, I would like to know what everyone has heard/done.  This coming Sunday will be the first time I may have any desire to drink alcohol (superbowl party - my team is in it) since learning I was pregnant (the day before LAST year's superbowl...ironic).  I EBF and would only want 1-2 mixed drinks.  I have heard some say to "pump and dump" if you drink, and others have said to use stored milk for a few hours and then it's okay, that alcohol would be out of my system.  What have you all heard?  I may end up not drinking any alcohol at all, but in case I would like to know what you have heard.

  • If you're ok to drive, you're ok to nurse.  You can have a couple of drinks without worry.

  • if you are ok to drive you are ok to nurse. no need to pump and dump.
  • If you feel comfortable enough to drive, then you should be fine to nurse. You can always nurse right before you start drinking if that makes you feel better.

There is no need to pump and dump unless you plan on getting trashed.

On average, it's about 2.5 hours wait per drink. If you eat along with it, this helps. 1-2 drinks per week should be fine. I actually stopped all drinking till I'm done BFing because the limitations were depressing and I just didn't want to mess with it anymore.

  • Thanks all!  This is good to know.  I rarely drink, and when I do it's just 1-2, so sounds like I would be okay.  Appreciate it! :)

  • You don't have to pump and dump--alcohol leaves your breastmilk like it leaves your bloodstream. So you only have to pump/dump if you need to relieve any engorgement.

The rule is that if you feel any buzz at all, no nursing. If I'm having more than 1, I usually have some freezer milk handy just in case the buzz lasts longer than expected now that I'm a lightweight.

  • Basically your body metabolizes the alcohol and it does get out of your BM with time.  If you had 1 drink all the alcohol should be out of your system within an hour.  I had a few sips at a wine tasting party, but that is all I've had to drink since Jan. 2 of 2010.  I just don't want to chance DD getting any in her system, but that's just me.  I also avoided alcohol during the 2WW while ttc.

  • like pp's said- if you ok to drive, then you're ok to feed.

the only time i have pumped and dumped is becasue i had a little TOO much to drink, and wasnt able to feed seth for a few hours, and was super engorged.

HTH. and have fun. its nice to have a few drinks and just relax, i didnt realize how much i missed it until i actually chilled out and had a beer.

    Yup.

  • A couple drinks is absolutely nothing to fret about....seriously. I just nurse immediately prior to having a drink, then by the time the next nursing session comes around, it is pretty much out of my system. If I have more than one drink, I have my husband give LO a bottle of expressed milk (this is our weekend routine when I want two drinks - kind of my treat for the weekend evenings). I never pump and dump (and wouldn't unless I was uncomfortable and engorged).  I can't drink more than two drinks at a time these days. I'm a complete lightweight and it just isn't worth it the next morning.
