  Hi, this is my first time joining the check-in.  So far I have mostly been lurking and asking questions.  I have a lot!

   

  My EDD is March 16 in Northern California.  I am using Hypnobabies for my natural birth and we are Team Green.

  QOTW:  I think I would ask them something about when they find it appropriate to induce and/or augment labor by means of an amniotomy or Pitocin.

  In other news... we are getting our maternity photos taken this Saturday!  I'm pretty excited and I hope it goes smoothly with DS being there and all, lol.  I'm sure he will enjoy it though since they will be done outside.  And my next checkup is in a week.  I think I'm getting my GBS swab taken and I'm always nervous about stuff like that because it's one of those things that can sort of make or break how you've been envisioning your experience!

  Hi there!  I have posted a couple of time, but mostly just lurk around--everyone is so helpful!

  My guess date is 3/10/11, we are planning on birthing in a birthing center using hypnobirthing techniques, and we are team blue!

  I'm so excited!!!I have my midwife home visit tomorrow as well as a home visit with one of our doulas. I can't believe how close we are. Baby has definitely dropped. I'm getting lets of comments from people about how low I am now and I can feel her head pushing on my cervix everyday. Not exactly pleasant but nice to know she's ready to go (because so am I)!

  With my OB, the first thing I wanted to know was how he felt about birth plans. You never know with an OB how Natural Birth "friendly" they are going to be, so that was my jumping off point.

  QOTW: If you were interviewing a new OB or midwife, what is one key question that you would ask them?

  A week and a half until EDD!  DH is going out of town this week and my mom is on her way here.  Hopefully there will be no L&D while DH is gone...just wait until the weekend, baby!

  QOTW: The "key" question I asked my midwives when I was pregnant with my son was about c/s rates and episiotomy rates. Both, thankfully, are about 5% with their practice.
  

   

  In other news, I think I have PUPPPs again. It started on one side of my belly, and now it's on both sides, and I keep hoping it will go away but it's only getting worse and I've had it for about a week now. Along with some new stretchies. Whee.  So any "anti-itchy" juju would be greatly appreciated. I am going to ask about it on Friday at my appointment but ugh. This itching is making me crazy.

  QOTD: I think its really important to know how involved the doc/MW will be in your labor. Some are just there to catch the babe, others are there throughout.

  QOTW: When I interviewed my MW, the first thing I asked her was "What's your birth policy" and was so pleased with her answer. It was really important to me to find someone who felt the same way about birth that I do. After that, I pretty much knew the answers to the other questions before I asked them.

  I would also like to join the list. I am birthing at home... I am currently team green. I plan on using hypnobabies and renting a tub. My due date is June 17, 2011.

   

  My major question for the midwife would be what plans or procedures does she have in place for emergencies? Which ones can she handle and what are her plans for ones she can not.

  At our last MW appointment LO was head down... yay! She's been low throughout the whole pregnancy but I can tell she has grown a lot over the last week or so. I've had lots of pelvic and lower back pain for months and DH finally was able to make it to an appointment with me. The MW showed him some massage techiniques to help relieve my hip bones that definitely made a difference. Now it's just a matter of getting him to help me out more often. Lots of BH too... typing through one right now!

  QOTW: The first question I asked my OB was about the hospital he works with. I expressed my concerns about that hospital and in his attempt to make me feel better about it, actually just confirmed everything I was trying to say in the first place. We switched to a MW and birthing center. I don't remember asking too many questions at the birth center because they answered pretty much everything when I called or during our tour.

  We are looking into switching to a MW, so this sounds like a great place to start.

  Other news, we told my mom and her fiance, and my bride-to-be sister and her fiance this weekend. Our guess date is 3 days after my sister's only shower so I was REALLY nervous about how she'd take it, but it went really well. 

  DH's b-day is Thursday, so MIL, FIL, and bros-IL are planning to come over for MIL's homemade to-die-for bumpy cake and ice cream. We're telling them then. Hoping to make plans with my dad for Friday night. Then all the immediate family knows.

  Our baby Emiko has arrived! She was due on January 27th and arrived January 24th at 1:37 am.  She weighed 7 lbs and 11 oz, and was 20 inches long. We had the natural birth that we wanted and now have a wonderful, healthy baby girl! 

  If you were interviewing a new OB or midwife, what is one key question that you would ask them?

  If we were interviewing a new midwife, I'd want them to walk me through their support, general procedures, and overall practice for labor/delivery.  I think I'd make sure I was on the same page as them for the general stuff (regarding how I could expect to be treated through the pregnancy) before interviewing them, so would really want to know more about what to expect when the baby comes.

  Please add me to the list! EDD is June 18, giving birth in a hospital and it's a boy. Not sure about birthing method yet.

  QOTW: I'm not sure how I would phrase this as a question, but I remember meeting with our midwife and the first thing she said was "We don't think pregnancy and labor are sicknesses. This is a natural, normal process and we are here to help, not to "fix" you." I think every OB and midwife should have a similar opinion.

  QOTW: I asked about policies and procedures for induction, their opinion on letting me labor naturally, having a doula, etc.  I also asked the standard procedures for after the baby is born i.e. letting us have some skin to skin time and breastfeeding before running tests, the hospital's rooming in policy, how long are we required to stay after baby is born, etc.

   

  An update:  My insurance would not agree to let me go to a birthing center, but they are allowing me to see midwives at a local hospital which is a huge score!  And, after 2 mths of having to deal with drama about wanting to change my OB I finally have an appointment with a midwife this Friday!  I also signed up for Hypnobabies classes and think I have found a doula I really like, so it's been an exciting past few days!
