CDs and rashes

My mom has a couple of concerns about CDing.  She's going to be our daycare and said she'd do whatever we're doing, but wants to make sure we've thought of everything.  Anyway, one of her concerns is that with cloth diapers the wetness won't be absorbed away from the skin like disposables so she feels like the kids would be more prone to rashes.  Anyone have issues with this?  Also, for treating rashes, what do you use if not normal diaper creams?

Still doing research and still a lot to learn on how the whole thing works so sorry if these are silly questions.

Re: CDs and rashes

  • I was really surprised at how little wetness there actual is.  We use BG3s and sometimes she doesn't feel wet, but I pull out the inserts and they're soaked.

We have had several rashes, but she seems to get them around the time she's teething or if she eats mandarin oranges.

We use a very small amount of CA Baby diaper cream,  along with a flushable liner.  I just let daycare know to use very, very sparingly and let it absorb into the skin so that there isn't a lot to be onto the diaper.

  • Some women will say that CDs cause rashes, and others will say that disposables do. I really think it depends on the child.

Ditto kelley - with BGs, the stay-dry liner often feels bone dry, but the insert is soaked.

In general, CDs don't hold as much liquid as disposables so they need to be changed more often anyway. This helps keep rash away regardless of what type of dipes one uses.

All that being said, we've had rash issues. They didn't start until well over a year after we began using CDs, so I hate to blame the CDs themselves. I think we have a yeast problem and I have yet to be able to properly strip the diapers in my HE machine.

  • Maya has had very few rashes and I don't think any of them are related at all to the CDs--teething is most likely the cause I think.  When we do use diaper cream we use Burt's Bees and a piece of cut up fleece to keep the cream off of the diaper.  That being said, she is 18 months and we just got through our first tube of diaper cream so you can see that we don't need it very often.
