Significant Winter Storm: Monday ? Wednesday
Southern, Central, and Northern IN
A significant winter storm is expected to move across the state starting tonight through Wednesday. This strong system will bring rain, snow, ice, and high winds throughout the state. Significant ice and snow accumulations can be expected across central and northern Indiana. Winds will also become strong Tuesday night through Wednesday. The combination of ice, snow, and wind could result in widespread downed trees and power lines. Below is a forecast for northern, central, and southern Indiana for today and Tuesday.
Tonight- Round #1
Northern Indiana: A mixture of sleet and snow will start to fall after the evening rush hour and move northeast across the state. Total snowfall accumulation of 3-5? can be expected.
Central Indiana: A mixture of freezing rain and sleet will begin to start falling around 7-8 pm this evening. At this time, it appears the precipitation will fall mainly as freezing rain. Total accumulation will be around a tenth to a quarter inch of ice by Tuesday morning.
Southern Indiana: Freezing rain will be possible tonight, mainly between the hours of midnight and 10:00am Tuesday. Total ice accumulation is expected to be about one tenth of an inch. Temperatures will rise by midday Tuesday, allowing conditions to improve greatly. Highs temperatures are forecasted to be around 41 degrees.
Tuesday-Round #2
Northern: The second round of winter weather will bring mostly snow, however; snow may mix with freezing rain and sleet. The area concerned with the mixture of freezing rain and sleet will be south of Highway 24. Minor icing is possible. Counties in the extreme north will see the highest amounts of snowfall, with 18-20? possible. During the afternoon hours, sustained winds will be between 15-30 mph, with higher gusts possible. With the combination of snow and winds, near blizzard conditions will be possible.
Central: Areas in central IN should expect ice and snow accumulations. Areas along the I-70 corridor, and the cities north of I-70 (Terre Haute, Indianapolis, Bloomington, New Castle, and Muncie) will experience a mixture of freezing rain and sleet. Ice accumulation totals of 1.00? or greater will be possible. Areas to the north of this line (Kokomo and Lafayette) will see an all snow event. Heavy snow is expected, with totals exceeding 12.00?. Winds will become strong out of the northeast at 15-30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph.
Southern: The areas in southern Indiana are not a concern at this time. Temperatures will be well above freezing throughout the day. By nightfall, temperatures will fall below freezing, and the precipitation will change over to a mixture of rain and snow. Total snow accumulations less than 1.00? is expected. Winds will be out of the northeast between 15-21 mph.
Current Weather Watches, Warnings, and Advisories: Winter Storm Watch: Northern, Central, and Southern Indiana from Monday afternoon/Evening through Wednesday evening. Freezing Rain Advisory: Crawford, Harrison, Floyd, and Perry counties until 12:00 today EST. Blizzard Watch: Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton Counties from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday afternoon.
The major threats at this time are: Significant ice and snow accumulations across central and northern IN Strong winds Tuesday night through Wednesday Widespread downed trees and power lines possible Hazardous driving conditions are likely from Tuesday through Wednesday night
