Day/Night confusion

Anyone dealth with a newborn who slept better during the day and was cranky in the middle of the night?  If so, how did you deal with it?

DS sleeps like a champ during the day but when he gets up for a bottle in the middle of the night we are up for at least two hours because after he eats he will not fall asleep and most of the time does a lot of crying.

I'm just not use to this as with DD she would get up for a bottle and I'd be up for a half of an hour at the most to change her diaper, feed her and put her back to bed.

Re: Day/Night confusion

  • How old is your baby? My DD is now 3 weeks, and I am hitting that time. Yesterday I was up with her for about 4 hours, she was nursing, then hiccups, then she was up for about 2 hours just hanging out. I honestly don't think it's a day/night thing but a growth spurt, which hits at 3 and again at 6 weeks. The first 2 weeks were great, she just slept all the time, now she is up at night. Honestly, she is soooo much easier than DD #1 who would cry all day and night, so this is "easy" for me.

Some things I do that other probably wouldn't, is I took DD to be with me last night, it was the only I could sleep. If she was awake, she was in my arms and not crying.  I also make sure she has no gas, which seems to make things worse, so I used gas drops before bed.

  • DS will be three weeks old tomorrow.  I hope it is just a quick phase as he woke up DD twice last night!  I wouldn't mind if he was just "awake" but he is just fussy.

Everything that I read online says to keep him in a dark room but honestly I take him downstairs and watch tv usually alternating between rocking him or walking with him until he calms down and falls asleep.

  • Josie didn't start going to bed before 2 AM until 7 weeks. I just adapted my sleeping schedule to her and we didn't get out of bed until 10 AM. I bedshare so it was a lot easier to deal with her nursing late at night. We'd stay out in the living room until she fell asleep and a lot of times I'd sleep on the couch and she'd be in the pack and play. This was the one aspect of the first weeks I had no clue about, I wish someone would have told me this was so common.

There really isn't much you can do to reverse it, I tried all the tricks. I tried putting her in front of the window in the early AM too (the light is supposed to help reverse it) but I literally just tried to push her back an hour every few days. Just hang in there Mama! Soon he'll be sleeping earlier.

We did this w/ DD her first 2ish weeks.  It was the only way to stay sane.

I do thnk the gas has alot to do w/ it too and once we started giving DD gas drops all the time as a preventive measure, her sleep improved.

  • Thanks guys!  I gave DS some gas drops last night and only one crying fit he slept so much better.  I bought him downstairs to feed him so he wouldn't wake his sister but after each bottle he went right back to sleep.  I'm hoping we can keep this up :)
