VBAC

Intro and a WWYD?

Hi Everyone,

Long timer lurker and now as I contemplate my next pregnancy I have run into some different scenarios that I am interested in opinions on. I was fully prepared for my natural birth, did hypnobirthing with a Doula, and envisioned my perfect birth scenario. I was induced at 39w 5d due to my pre-eclampsia and went into full out labour 7 hours after they put in the cervadil. I got to the hospital at 4 am and was 4cm dilated so right into a L&D I went. Everything went wonderful for the first 12 hours, I got to 9.5 cm no problem and started to really want to push. Since I had that lip of cervix left they had me hold off for 4 more hours. Lip was gone and I pushed for 2 hours. Baby was posterior and at an angle and had not even descended a bit. That is when my BP spiked to 155/120 and everything went crazy. I ended up having a c-section, but was happy and relieved that I had a healthy baby boy in the end.

I have endometriosis and the pain is back with a vengance. The only thing that I can take to cope is Tylenol 3 and I will only take it if I am absolutely in crazy amounts of pain. I hate taking anything to begin with, let alone something so strong, so I find myself curled up the fetal position alot of the day. I felt great when I was pregnant and am finding more and more that I want to pregnant again. My DH and I were originally going to start trying again when Ian was 6 months but my OB who did my section has told me that in order to have a VBAC I should be waiting at least a year before we TTC again.

Therein lying my dilema. I am struggling with my desire to have a VBAC and with not wanting to wait and struggling with the pain I am in. I am also concerned having another c-section and whether or not that will effect if I want to go on to have a 3rd or 4th pregnancy. Is there anyone out there who had a succesful VBAC after a 2nd c-section? How about someone who had 3 or 4 c-sections? I am at a loss here : (

Re: Intro and a WWYD?

  • Welcome! There definitely are women who have had VBAC's after more than one c/s. I'm not sure of any on here but I'm guessing they'll respond if they are.

It's really a hard decision to make. On the one hand, the potential complications rise w/ each c/s. On the other, it sounds like you're in considerable pain. I don't know much about endo. After you are finished having kids, what will you do about the pain? I'm wondering because if after you are done having kids, if you'll have to keep taking the tylenol and the relief only comes with being pregnant, then I don't see an advantage to having a child earlier if it hinders a vbac attempt. Either way you'd only be getting 9 months of pain relief, so it doesn't seem to matter if that comes one year after your first child or 6 months. Does that make sense?

But again, I don't know about endo and its treatment. That would probably affect my answer.

Ditto.  What will you do after your next baby about the endo?

I'm doing a quick Google and it looks like having a c/s can actually contribute to endometriosis issues, so I'd ask my doctor about that.  If that's the case, I would consider waiting to TTC in order to optimize my chance of having a VBAC and reduce the risk of my endo being worse in the long-run.

If you think you want to have more than 2 children, I'd definitely try to have a VBAC personally.  The risks of having 3-4 cesareans scares me and as for having a VBAC after 2 cesareans--well it's always better if you can just avoid the second c/s in the first place.  It's hard to find doctors and hospitals that will do VBA2C, although some of the ladies on here have been lucky.

  • After we are finished having children I plan on having a Hysterectomy. I am not sure I will be done after 2 children, so I think trying for a VBAC is a better option. Thankfully I have a husband who has 6 months of Paternity leave so he is a big help with Ian while I am dealing with pain. Thanks for the opinions ladies! I am going to see if my doctor can also refer me to a gynecologist here (I had to leave my gynecologist back in Edmonton when we moved) to see if they might have any more ideas about pain relief : (
