Suggestions for pg related back/hip pain?

Any suggestions on how I can get rid of or reduce at a minimum the back/sciatic nerve/hip pain, other than sitting down and propping my feet up?  Unfortunately with H out of the game for a several more weeks, that's not really much of an option.  Last night Eli had a night terror and I sprang out of bed (well as quickly as an 8 month pg lady can) and about hit the floor because of the hip/back pain.  I kept screaming "mommy's coming", but I seriously think H could have hobbled down the hallway on his crutches faster than I was moving.  And it seriously crops up just from doing the normal household routine minus some of the cleaning (boo!).  I even think sleeping/laying down agrevates the hip pain a little, but I have to sleep on my side or I can't breathe.  It does seem to reduce in strength after I am up moving for a while, but those first 10-15 minutes are just insanely painful.

Please tell me there is something I can do other than just tylenol and trying to relax?  My OB wasn't much help, so I'm thinking I just gotta suck it up, but thought I would ask you all to see if you found anything that helped you.

Re: Suggestions for pg related back/hip pain?

  • I went to the chiro and it helped quite a bit.  I had lower back pain from like 30 weeks on, and I finally gave in at about 35 weeks and went, made a huge difference.  I still hurt, but not nearly as much.

ETA; I second a maternity belt.  I wore one as well and it helped some, but not enough.  The chiro though was much more helpful.

  • Are you wearing a maternity support?  I know when I wore one for the few times I could bother to strap the darned thing on it helped take pressure of the back a lot.  Also are you seeing a Chiro?  I hardly have any back and hip pain the last 2 pregnancies because I went to the Chiro religiously.

  • I was wondering if a chiro would help or not.  I will definitely make an appointment to see H's chiro.  And I don't have a maternity support belt, but at this point I will try just about anything!

  • I'm a fan of the chiropractor too. this pregnancy I saw one and had virtually no hip pain or headaches.

  • I sleep with a snoogle- wrapped up in between my legs and then around my back to my head.  It supports my hips and keeps me lined up right- not too mention my back- which hurts a lot!!

  • I had a lot of SI joint pain that radiated into my right hip.  It was worst in the morning or the middle of the night when I would first get up and try to take a few steps.  I almost fell a few times because of the pain.  I started wearing an SI belt sometime in my second trimester (it holds the joint in place between your pelvis and your spine) and it also helped to support my belly.  It helped a ton, especially given that I was on my feet all day at work.  I highly recommend getting some kind of belly support.  The tightness of the support will probably also act like the SI belt and help hold your joints in your pelvis stable.....it really sounds like this is your problem.  Also, try to make sure to wear really supportive shoes as support for your back and pelvis start with your feet.  And ask your OB about stretches.....hamstring stretches and hip rotator stretches will also help.  Hope you feel better soon.  Mine got significantly better in the 3rd tri and then was completely gone the minute DD was born.  Crazy!

  • Ditto JLPT.  Stretches seemed to help me a bunch.  The other thing you might try is heat.  GL!
