I am due May 27th and teach in Vermont. Is my best bet to take from, say, May 26th off until school is out as sick days(last day of school is about June 10th)? I know some people work up until the last moment. Then, my summer would be paid as usual and I would be home until August 20th(day to go back to work). Does this sound reasonable?
Also, does anyone know the maternity leave "rules" in this state? I'm not finding many answers.
Thanks!
Re: Maternity Leave Questions from Teacher
States don't really have "rules" regarding maternity leave. They follow FMLA which is a federal regulation if the employer falls under that jurisdiction. Since you're a teacher and will be getting paid leave essentially anyway I don't think any of that would help you or not.
Wait until you get closer to your due date before you decide what to do about the last days of your pregnancy. You may feel better than you think and want to work through up to the end. You may also end up delivering earlier or later than you anticipate and if it's later you'd essentially burn up a lot of sick days that you could have used later on for other reasons.
It also changes district to district for us in MA. Do you have a handbook from your district? They should outline what you get and for how long? Also, call your HR and speak with them about the process. Also, like PP said, call your union rep.
For me, we get 8 weeks. First they use up all of your sick days (which for me, as this is my first year in this district is 10 days) and then you apply for the sick bank and that covers the rest of the days. I am due May 3rd and originally I was thinking of going out April 27th (to make the transition from April vacation easier for the kids) until the end of the year (7 weeks). BUT, we have had 4 snow days already and they are predicting more snow this week. Once I hit 5 snow days, I need to re-think my dates, otherwise I will have to come back in June for a day or two. SO I may end up working until May 3rd (unless of course I have the baby before then)... I'd prefer not to tho. GL!
My MARRIED Bio
fmla is the only thing i know of that will apply to everyone. usually laws/rules are a district by district thing b/c of contracts.
i get 6 or 8 weeks unpaid and then if i take longer than that, i am only allowed to return sept. 1 or feb. 1. sucky! if i deliver on time, i will have about 9 weeks (over the summer) and then will have to return on sept. 1st. i am going to take my 6 weeks paid fmla but i have to use them so that i return on feb. 1 or sept. 1.
i'm due at the end of june. my understanding is that fmla grants you up to 12 weeks but 6 of them you are paid a portion of your salary. as i'm typing, i'm remembering that this is new to new jersey. i guess it could be totally different for you. as for the sept 1 or feb 1, that's in our contract so it's unique (and stupid!) to our district.
