Eczema help needed

DD has recently developed eczema on the insides of her elbows and a few other splotches here and there. What are the best ways to treat this? Any products you recommend, any to stay away from? Thanks!

Re: Eczema help needed

  • I use lotions with no fragrence, right now i'm using eucerin calming cream it works great...LO's eczema is worse in the winter too. I also use hydrocortisone cream on the spots that are rough or blotchy my pedi gave me a script for one.

  • DD seems to have just developed some spots of eczema.... how do you know that's what it is?

  • DD seemed to get it once winter came and it got bad FAST. She was up all night itching her face. So I took her to the pedi to confirm that it was eczema and she gave us some samples of Eucerin Calming Cream. She also said to stay away from anything with a fragrance.  I was using Johnson & Johnson bedtime bath and bedtime lotion but that is what was making it worse! I now use Aveeno Baby lotion (no scent) and I use the Aveeno Baby wash/shampoo.  Her rash never came back! Then, I got stupid, and decided to give her a bubble bath one night.  The rash came right back!

Also, her pedi said not to let her sit in the bath for long AFTER i washed her. So I let her play for about 10minutes, then wash her. Anddd, she said just pat her dry after!

Finally, I asked if they just outgrow it or what (this is what I read on the internet) but the dr said some do, but most don't. She told us that it could develop into allergies and/or asthma. I don't know how true that is though.

  • We were using Johnson's body wash and the peed suggested we switch to Dove body wash for sensitive skin.  I was worried because it isn't specifically for babies, but the peed said it's the best thing for eczema (and DD had BAD eczema!).  Worked like a charm!

  • DS had eczema really bad when he was small. We went to a dermatologist and found out it can be allergies. Frequent baths with pat dry afterwards. Keep the skin extra moisturized with scent free lotion. Dermatologist says it will end by 2...if it doesn't go away then they will have it forever.

DD doesn't have it bad. Just spotty. I recommend California Baby. They make an all natural cream.

  • The only thing that worked for DS was Eucerine.

  • Like the others have mentioned, fragrance free soaps (aveeno, dove, etc are wonderful), fragrance free laundry detergent and no dryer sheets.  as soon as your baby is out of the bathtub and patted dry, rub a TON of lotion/cream on her/his skin (greasy like a pig at the state fair, i like aveeno products as well as cerave).  You can do this multiple times a day when you see her rash is active.  eczema is the itch that rashes. the most important thing to do is to moisturize the skin with creams, avoid irritants like fragrance and even cut back on baths... ie. you are giving your baby less reason to itch irritated, dry skin!  My 8M old son started to develop eczema and we cut bathing back to every 2 - 3 nights. Although some believe soaking is the answer, give both approaches a try and see how your baby fares.  We wash our son with a little soap and water and washcloth (face, hands, diaper area) if needed during the day. The above regimen has helped keep his eczema under control and usually clear!  I'm a dermatology resident as well...
  • There are lots of different lotions and creams, but one thing I really like is actually special clothing designed to help with eczema, called Technical Comfort from Halo (as in the sleepsacks).  You can get more info at - https://www.halocomforts.com/  My LO sleeps in it every night!
