Successful VBAC with odd shaped pelvis?

Hi ladies-

Well, I am hoping I can try for a VBAC this time. Apparently I had a c-section because I had a narrow pelvis that a head wouldn't pass through. I don't know, was anyone told they had this and went on to have a successful VBAC? I didn't progress back 4cm even with pitocin. I am excited to see if my OB is on board with trying it. She is new to me so I am hoping she is supportive!

Re: Successful VBAC with odd shaped pelvis?

  • My doctor said my pelvis "wasn't great" and I still had a VBAC. However, I needed a lot of help--the doctor had to turn the baby because he was face-up and I needed a little tug from the vacuum. I don't know if the shape of my pelvis necessarily caused these things to happen, but I probably needed more interventions than someone without an oddly shaped pelvis. It's possible and I'm so glad I had a VBAC!

  • Did they measure your pelvis, or did they make the assumption it is narrow because the baby wasn't coming out? If they actually measured it, is there a deformity or other reason to think it won't open up as a normal pelvis does when in favorable positions?

Hi- they never measured my pelvis but at my 39 week appt the doctor said he was feeling the "table" of my pelvis and it was very narrow. he didn't even think I could go in to labor on my own, but I did. Then a year later I saw a midwife and asked her opinion, after "feeling around" she said, she is pretty sure I can't deliver vaginally. I don't know, I am not totally counting myself out. We will see if my pelvis decides to change this pregnancy, I heard it's possible!!!

  • My former OB said my pelvis was "on the small side" with no diagnostic test run (just her "eyeball" guessing).  Riiiiiight.

I had a successful hospital VBAC with midwives a few weeks ago.  My midwife and doula both said that since DS's head was not molded or coned in any way (he was 8lb, 2oz) that I could easily deliver a significantly larger baby next time with little or no issues, assuming good positioning etc.

Unless you've had diagnostic tests run (MRI, x-ray, etc) by an orthopedic specialist... I'm calling BS on you having a "narrow pelvis".

  • Woot! Thanks Babyike! I feel inspired. Let's hope the OB agrees and gives me the green light. Seriously, they checked with their hands...I am going to try for it! :)

  • I had a very scary birth with an emergency c/s because of a narrow pelvis. I'm not a VBAC candidate. Ryan's heartrate dropped into the 40's and it was the most terrifying moment of my entire life. I can just now talk about it without feeling a sense of panic.

That being said, a lot of women who are told they are unable to deliver because of a small pelvis actually can, it just depends on the baby's position/size/other stuff that goes into having a baby!
