Let me start this by posting how my baby shower is going to work. I am not finding out the sex of my baby, but I am going to ask my Dr to look and check for me. Then, closer to the baby shower my sister in law is going to call and find out the gender. When she has the cake made she is going to have the baker dye the inside of the cake pink or blue. I am having a HUGE baby shower with both my family and my DH's family. I thought it would be cute for ALL of us to find out together
My question is, I have the theme picked already for the nursery. It's gonna be unisex, but do I wait to buy the crib and furniture or do I go ahead and buy it? I don't want to expect my family to buy it, but I don't want to take it away from them if they want to or plan on it.
Re: wait for baby shower?
How many weeks will you be for your baby shower? A lot of people like to have the nursery at least mostly done before their shower so they can show pictures and then have a place to put away a lot of the gifts they receive. If you find a deal on a set you like I'd not hold out. My MIL volunteered early on that she wanted to buy us a glider under a certain price point so we bought one and she paid us back. If she hadn't offered we'd have just bought it.
You'll have enough other large ticket items I'd not do the furniture on there too. Usually you have to pick it up from the store (if its BRU) and that'd be a pain for whoever was purchasing for you to coordinate. You could wait until after your shower and use gift cards towards purchasing your furniture if you were concerned about cost.

Love the idea of you all finding out together, a beautiful family bonding moment.
Buy the furniture yourself but wait on getting the bedding until after, a baby shower is always full of surprises.
I think most furniture is gender neutral, so if you already have the theme picked out you might as well get the furniture as well (or put it on your registry).
That said, we got out crib the night before I went into labor with DD. Nothing like waiting until the last minute!
This.
Buy it now. If your family was planning to buy the nursery furniture, they would've told you by now. Most likely for your shower you will get a lot of baby clothes and diapers. DON'T buy clothes! Wait until after your shower and then you can buy whatever you didn't get.
