"Rowan" for a girl?

I've posted before about not being able to pick any girl names.  We have, however, picked two boy names:  Samuel and Rowan.  Apparently Rowan is also a girl's name, though I've never met a girl with that name (that's a plus in my book, btw). So, WDYT about it?

Some ideas:

Rowan Marie (my mom's name)

Rowan Camille (my middle name)

Rowan Virginia (my great-granny's name)

Rowan Claire (nobody in particular)

Re: "Rowan" for a girl?

  • My cousin's name is Rowan, and she is a girl.  I think it's very pretty.  I think Brooke Shields named her daughter Rowan as well.

  • LOVE IT!  any of those middle names would be fab
  • IMO it's not bad! Would you consider an alternate spelling - Rowyn? I dunno, just an idea to feminize it? I think you could make that happen for a little girl, for sure.

  • I know a little baby boy Rowan, but it could definitely work for a girl.  I like Rowan Camille!

  • There is a nestie on D&R that named her baby Rowan. It is very fitting for her.  It's a nice name.

I like Rowan Marie in you have a good relationship with your mom. It would be a nice way to honor her.

My DH originally picked Rowan in honor of Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, an all-around awesome human (who will be marrying Prince William & Kate M, btw) so I'd probably leave it unchanged.

    Thanks for the input!

  • I Love it! It's my top girl name but dh doesn't like if because he thinks it's only a boy's name. I teach and have known a few girls named Rowan. I like Rowan Claire or Rowan Marie.
  •  I love the name Rowan! Any middle name is great!
  • Rowan Marie is the best choice I think but marie is also a very popular for a middle name. Cute!

My sister was going to name her son Rowan... All I can think of is "Rowan a boat."

  • I love Rowan for a girl. I never knew it was common for boys. My favorite of those is Rowan Marie.

  • Honestly, I'm not a fan.  Maybe because it is kind of close to Ryan, which I can't stand as a girl's name.

  • Rowan is my middle name! It's a family name, and it's not very common, but I like it ha ha.  My OBGYN named her daughter Rowan.  I like names that are a little different though.

  • I like Rowan for a boy or a girl- our DD is Avery, so unisex isn't a big deal to us. I like the Rowan Camille sounds the best, but really they are all good.

  • To be honest, I'm not a big fan of Rowan. However, I really like all of your middle names! My favorites are Camille or Virginia.
