February 2011 Moms

2nd time moms on a budget-

We are nearing the end of what we wanted to spend on baby's items and trying to be frugal knowing that only some of my maternity leave is going to be paid.  The things that we are considering right now are the following still to be purchased: another car seat base for DH's car (mine is set up already), a camcorder, or a new breast pump (I have one that a cousin gave me that we had checked out and I can still buy pump parts for it like new tubing, but it is just huge and older looking).  My question is, what would you guys get if you had to splurge for one more big item?  The carseat base is about $80, and the camcorder or breast pump are likely to run around $300 each.  Did you really need a second car seat base for DH's car?  We RARELY if ever drive his car anywhere because it is stick shift and I hate it.  My guess is that with proper planning, if he needed to have the baby for the day, he could just take my car and then we wouldn't have to worry about buying a brand new base....

  • Also most infant seats can be strapped in with just the seat belt. You don't have to have the base. So that would not be my first thought.

Hm, if you are going back to work, you will need a good pump. I think that would be my choice.

Maybe you can ask your parents/in laws for a video camera for your birthday?

  • A good pump seems essential if you're going back to work. If you're going to be pumping at work something that is easily portable would seem like a logical investment. :)

I'm choosing to get a nice pump before we get the camcorder we want, if it helps at all with your decision.

  • I'd go with the pump if you're going to pump at work as well.  Also have you looked into a Flip video camera?  We got one and it's tiny and easy to use and cheaper -- around $150 I think at Target.
  • Honestly we never use my husbands car either.  If I were you, unless you are planning on pumping exclusively, would go with the camcorder.  Those first videos  of my children are maybe the most special thing to us that we could own.

  • Check with your insurance. Mine covered a new pump!  Then you could get the video camera!  The second base we just basically let whoever has the kids use the "kids van" : )
  • Good advice on the car seat- I will check on if it can be put in with only a seat belt.  I will be returning to work, but not for three months, so maybe a camcorder now and then if the used pump doesn't work as well as I want it to, then I could get a new one a few months down the line?  We also did check with insurance regarding a pump and mine will not cover anything- even with me sending in for prior authorization because I have carpal tunnel & can't use a manual pump.

  • Like PP said, I got my pump free through insurance.  Check to see if that is an option for you - then you could just worry about the camcorder.

The 2nd base isn't really necessary.  They are pretty easy to swap from car to car.
