Gloves to help with slippery baby?

I am really nervous about how slippery my baby will get when I give her a bath.  I have a tendency to drop things, so much so that DH jokes about me dropping the baby.  I have broken many glasses when washing them because they were slippery.  Anyway, I have read in a few places about wearing bath gloves to help with the handling of a slippery baby.  Any 2nd+ moms, did you use gloves when washing your baby?  Did they help? What type of gloves did you use?  I have seen these, but they seem like a gimmick.

  • we got a bath seat like this https://www.amazon.com/Safety-1st-Bath-Sling-Blue/dp/B0032FOOXO/ref=sr_1_8?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1296312218&sr=1-8 and the fabric is mesh.  The baby sits in that the whole time and you won't have to pick it up at all.  I felt this was a better option for us and it takes up less room for storage.  Just put this in the tub and fill the tub up as usual.

actually, I think this is the exact one we have https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Fold-Store-Sling/dp/B000JVVXMO/ref=sr_1_14?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1296312218&sr=1-14

  • We have a baby tub that has the mesh sling inside it like pp.  I'm as clumsy as they come and never had a problem with DD in the tub.
  • This is the tub I put on my registry because Baby Bargains recommended it, it does not appear to help with slipping.  I like the idea of the fold sling since we only live in an apartment.

This. If you use a baby bath tub the baby will sit in the mesh seat and you wont have to pick them completely up at all until the bath is over, and then you can just wrap your LO in a towel.

  • If you are taking a birth/child care class they teach you how to safely wash the baby. They really don't get a "real bath" until their umbilical stump falls off. Even then you set them in the small tub and was them gently with a washcloth, they aren't submerged in soapy water. Then as pp said, just wrap in a towel and you are done. Don't worry, the whole bathing issue was one of my fears too!

  • i never used gloves to bathe dd.  i didn't have any problems with her being slippery.  she was pretty contained in her infant bathtub.

  • i agree with all the PPs above about never having a problem with bathing an infant.  another thing to keep in mind is that newborns and really young infants are not generally all that squirmy.  i mean, they can move their limbs a bit, but the actual baby's body is pretty immobile until 4-6 months.  i think you will definitely be fine without the gloves.

Although this is my first child I have given many babies a bath.  At the end of the bath I simply drain the water out.  Keep the baby in one hand and grab the towel with the other. Then I wrap the baby in the towel as much as possible w/o getting the towel to wet in the sink or tub and then pick the baby up with the towel.  If necessary I use a 2nd towel to properly dry the child.

  • No, never used them.  We use to put the baby bathtub on that table until she was about 10 months.  It was so much easier than hanging over the side of the tub.

  • I'd file these with the peepee teepees.  A hand towel in the bottom of the tub will keep baby from slipping and you can use a washcloth to help your hands get some traction when you take baby out of the tub.  Yes, you'll have a bit more wet mess to deal with, but that would probably set your mind at ease.  My other tip would be to put the towel right next to the tub so that if baby slips as you take him out of the tub, he lands right there on the towel.

  • When my mom and I were babysitting my cousin many many years ago, we didn't have a baby bathtub at our house so we just lined the kitchen sink in towels and filled it up and bathed him and I was laughing because it was like trying to hold onto a wet hotdog! lolWink

  • LOL, what? Just get a bath seat for the baby. I promise you'll both be fine.
