Those who know about Lactose Intolerance...

DD was a premie and has had several issues because of it. One was difficulty with regular formula. Now she is on soy formula. Since she has started eating table foods I have given her things with dairy in them, mac and cheese, grilled cheese, a chocolate chip cookie with no problems that I can see.

Last night she had her first quesadilla and she loved it. Ate more if it than anything else she has had. But later that night she threw it all up. She then threw up again then had some diarrhea. Since that she has been perfectly fine. It does not seem like the flu.

From what I read, throwing up is not a typical symptom of lactose intolerance and I am assuming it would not be that since she has had other dairy products. But I just thought I would see if it is a possibility. So, those who have LOs with some kind of lactose intolerance, do they have similar reactions to all dairy products? Or just certain ones or certain amounts?

  • I'm not positive if monster is lactose intolerant because we haven't given him any dairy. However, I myself use to be lactose intolerant before I got pregnant and dh is lactose intolerant. We can have small amounts of certain things before it bothers us. (ie: a grilled cheese, quesadilla, sometimes even a bowl of cereal) I would imagine it could be the same for your LO. HTH!

  • I have issues w milk & ice cream, but not yogurt or cheese.  I notice more of a problem on an empty stomach.  If I've eaten recently, then I can have a small bit of ice cream & be okay.  But eating cereal & milk first thing in the morning is a guaranteed stomach ache.

I'm not a puker, so I haven't ever thrown up but even so, it's more of an upset tummy not a nauseous feeling.

  • I'm lactose intolerant. It bothers me more with milk and ice cream than with cheese. I can have a small amount of cheese without being sick, but if I drink a glass of milk I get pains in my stomach, like gas pains, and I get nausea and sometimes diarrhea.

  • Thanks for the information. I won't rule it out. It seems that she can still grow out of it, if that is what it is. I will just keep an eye on how she does with certain foods. And the whole, on an empty stomach thing..that might have been part of it. We ate dinner a little late that night....
  • Is it possible that your LO over ate? Mine has thrown up twice for gorging herself after spending afternoons with her father as he is incapable of feeding her for whatever reason...I made him stay the second time to feed her dinner and she gorged then puked it all over him (then he had to drive 3.5 hours home covered in puke in his brand new truck :-) He's fed her regularly since then :-)
